I just went and played and I completed it! When there are heaps of stars, you are most likely to be tempted into getting a big combo. When joining the stars, release the mouse when power bar is about half way to avoid the thing when it goes red. When it goes red, it lowers your multiplier which helps greatly in gathering the points.

The multiplier slowly drops to 1 if you happen to miss any planet.
Noticed it on the higher stages and confirmed on on Stage 1. Just hold the mouse button down until all the energy is gone without missing any planets. The multiplier won't go down.
