At the start of the game, listen to the good Professor talk about the
game controls and adventure information if you wish, but otherwise, choose the
third option to continue (click the red box on the bottom screen to back up out
of the first dialogue choice, and just hit the text in the second one to
finish). Afterwards, tap the center of the Pokéball for Professor Rowan to show
off Munchlax in an exposition. Once he's finished, choose either the male or
female character by highlighting and then selecting them (whichever you choose
will not determine the course of the story or gameplay).

Choose a name for your character, confirm it, then use either one of the
default names for your rival or choose his name as well. For the course of this
walkthrough, we shall refer to him as Rival. Confirm his name as well, and then
you will be shrunk and put into the game world.

Watch the TV program, which is talking about a red Gyrados in hidings.
Afterwards, head down the staircase, and you will be met with by your mother,
whom shall have you be running after your Rival. Exit the house (with a warning
that will not apply for any longer than five minutes), then go to the
northwestern house in Twinleaf Town. Rival will pop out once you approach and
then head back inside. Follow after him, and go up the staircase in his house to
his room on the second floor. After the conversation is done, make your
leavetakings and continue outside again, then head north and into the Route 201
Area.

---------

Proceed north again and you shall encounter your Rival once again. After
he is done talking, he will tag up with you again. Now head west (Rival will
stop you from heading east for the moment), then go north and enter into the
forest/lake area.

Inside, you will automatically have an encounter with Professor Rowan
and either Lucas (if you are a girl) or Dawn (if you are a boy). The two shall
take their leave, giving you the opportunity to choose your own Pokémon. You had
better make it a good one, as a Starly will attack you at that moment. Below is
a brief profile of each of the starter Pokémon and their evolution chain.

____________________
#001 Turtwig - Grass
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Turtwig is an effective all-around balanced Pokémon, knowing Withdraw
right from the start, and learns Absorb and Razor Leaf at Levels 9 and 13.
Coupled with the Overgrow ability, which allows it's Grass attacks to increase
in power by 1.5 when HP is low, makes an effective early fighter, and it evolves
into Grotle at Level 18 and Torterra at Level 32, the latter of which will
be Grass/Ground type, and will be effective in Gyms 1, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8.

____________________
#004 Chimchar - Fire
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Chimchar focuses on attack, and can learn Leer, Taunt, Facade, and Calm
Mind as well as a variety of other physical and Fire attacks. The ability Blaze
allows his Fire attacks to deal 1.5x damage at low HP, but it's real claim to
fame is it's early evolution - evolving at Level 14 to Monferno (though it only
evolves to Infernape at Level 36). These latter two forms are also Fighting
type, much like the previous generation's Fire-starter's evolution chain, with
other attacks learnable like Feint, In Fight, and Punish. This makes him useful
in Gyms 1 (once evolved), 2, 5, 6, and 7. I HIGHLY recommend taking Chimchar
because, besides Ponyta/Rapidash, he is the ONLY Fire-type that you will be able
to obtain in the game until you have seen all 150 Sinnoh Pokémon, and Fire-types
are very much needed in the regular game of Diamond/Pearl.

___________________
#007 Piplup - Water
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Piplup is basically the "advanced player's Pokémon" of the
Diamond/Pearl generation, with a very poor early attack range ranging from
Bubble to Bide - not exactly the greatest variety. However, once he evolves to
Prinplup at level 16, things look up a bit, with attacks such as Metal Claw and
Bubblebeam, and Empoleon (whom is evolved to at Level 36) has a second type of
Steel, and can learn good attacks such as Aqua Jet, Mist, and Drill Peck. Thus,
this Pokémon is generally not very useful in gyms, likely only being effective
in Gyms 1, 5, 6, and 7.

After you make your pick of Pokémon (and in traditional fashion, your
Rival will choose the Pokémon that yours is weak to), you will have to fend off
a Level 2 Starly. At this point in time, I believe that you will not need a
strategy considering the lopsided power of your own Pokémon, so just attack
until the Starly falls. Once done, Lucas/Dawn will come back to meet you and
take the suitcase back. Head back south and leave the forest.

---------
Route 201
---------
Head east from here, and you will encounter Professor Rowan and
Lucas/Dawn again. After you finish your small talk, you shall then be
automatically transported back to your house in Twinleaf Town.

initial trio, making a secondary rival for you.

Outside, Lucas/Dawn will take you around for a little more sightseeing,
showing off the Poké Mart and Pokémon Center. Afterwards, s/he will head to the

back across Route 201 back to Twinleaf Town (if you wish to, you might also want
to head to the Poké Mart here to pick up some Poké Balls, but you will be
getting some more relatively soon).

¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

Continue north and then west through the grasses, and you will meet up
with Lucas/Dawn again. Lucas/Dawn will teach you the conventions of battling and
capturing a Pokémon, so if you are new to the series, pay attention. After some
words from him/her, s/he shall then give you five Poké Balls, and finally
leaves.

Now that we are on our merry way, it should be noted that this is an
appropriate time to catch some Pokémon for general battling, as if you only have
your Starter right now, things may get tough in the future. Picking up one of
each species in the area before you go on is a good idea, along with training
each of them to Level 4 or Level 5. Bidoof you will probably find to be useless
(but can still be utilized as a very useful HM whore), but Starly and Shinx each
will be relatively useful for those just wanting to make it through the game,
with no multiplayer; the former species will learn a number of Flying techniques
and can spam status moves, while the latter can learn Dark-type moves in
addition to Electric moves to destroy any Psychic-types you may encounter.
Kricketot is also useful, especially if you can get one holding Metronome.

After you are done, continue west and north through the grass, then try
to head east and you will meet up and battle your very first trainer - Youngster
Tristan.

_________________
Youngster Tristan
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
This battle is pretty easy to win, given that he has only a Level 5
Starly. Send out either your own Starly or a Shinx, as either of them can
counter the effects of his Growl with Growl and Leer, respectively. After the
battle of altrition is over and Tristan's Starly starts attacking, respond in
favor the next turn. The only other note here is the enemy Starly's Quick Attack
- if your own Pokémon does not have enough health to sustain another attack (and
it is not a Starly with Quick Attack and higher Speed stats), switch it out, as
Quick Attack always strikes first.

With the battle over, continue east along the dirt road. You will be
caught by the next trainer in line, Lass Natalie.

____________
Lass Natalie
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Let's face it - if you have been doing any sort of training whatsoever,
Natalie's Pokémon lineup will be a basic joke, given the two Bidoofs' low
levels. As such, you should treat them as fodder to gain a bit of experience
points for once you reach Jubilife City. Just send out a Pokémon, and attack
attack attack until your opposition falls.

Once finished, continue north through the field of grass. Try to
continue west, and you will be forced to battle the last of the triad of
trainers in Route 202; Youngster Logan.

_______________
Youngster Logan
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
By this point in time, your Pokémon should have gone up a few levels
from the previous battles and random encounters. As Logan's Shinx is only
Level 5, it does not yet know any Electrical techniques, so send out a Starly if
you want to. Otherwise, this should not be too difficult of a battle.

Now that you have defeated all the trainers in Route 202, head straight
west from your original position to the northwest position. Here, grab a Potion
from a Pokéball lying on the grass patch, then go back east just a bit and head
north into Jubilife City.

Here, you shall meet up with Lucas/Dawn again. S/he will give you the
number of Pokémon that you have caught so far, then takes her leave after
informing you of your Rival's current location - at the Trainer School right
here in Jubilife City.

The best way to find your Rival is to use its relative location -
opposite the street from the Pokémon Center in town. Enter the building, and
inside, talk to Rival, whom is at the blackboard. You will lose the Parcel, but
in turn, shall obtain a Town Map. He will mark his next objective as Oreburgh
City, then leaves the school. Before leaving the place, talk to the two trainers
on the blue carpet in here to fight them. Answer yes to fight each of them.

___________________
School Kid Harrison
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Given that School Kid Harrison only has a single Abra, and his Abra has
only a single attack, it should be considered a one-trick pony. The only thing
that should be considered is that your Pokémon with lower Special Defense stats
may not be able to inflict serious damage, so bring in someone with a decent
physical attack but also reasonable Special Defense.

____________________
School Kid Christine
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
See strategy above for School Kid Christine, considering it is the exact
same battle.

After winning both battles, talk to School Kid Harrison again, and he
will give you TM 10, Hidden Power. Now that you have done what you can here,
exit back outside onto the streets. Try to head north, and you will be stopped
by a man whom will offer you a Pokétch/Pokémon Watch in exchange for three
Pokéwatch coupons held by three clowns hiding around town. You will want to grab
a Pokétch, because it can offer a number of applications that are really useful.
Each clown is wearing a yellow suit and yellow hat with white balls, so here are
their locations;

1) Walking around right behind the nearby Pokémon Center
2) Hanging out in front of the TV station (far northwest section of the
town, has a giant TV screen over the building)
3) West a ways from the TV station, wandering around in front of the
Pokéwatch Company

Answer "Yes" to all three of their questions, and in turn they will each
give you a coupon. Once you have obtained all three Pokéwatch coupons, head back
to the man who accosted you earlier near the Pokémon Center, and exchange them
for a Pokéwatch.

With all that done, there is only one thing left to do around here
before we leave. Head north and go all the way west into the border check area.
In here, talk to the fisherman and answer yes to get the Old Rod. While it is
almost completely useless, it DOES allow you to catch Magikarp, which, once
trained to a sufficient level, can evolve into the more powerful Gyrados.

There are a couple of optional directions that you can go right now. You
could go west past the checkpoint and onto Route 218, or you could go north to
Route 204. However, Route 218 is a basic dock, and Route 204 leads to a dead end
right now, and will be visited later in the future. For now, just head east, and
out onto Route 203.

Right after entering Route 203, you will be instantly accosted by your
Rival, who will then challenge you to a Pokémon battle. Prepare yourself, and
being the battle of the titans.
_____
Rival
¯¯¯¯¯
Bring into the match your own starting Pokémon to counter Starly. This
is because (with the exception of if you have Piplup), Rival's own starter will
have a move that your's is weak to, and you do not want to put yourself into
that predicament. This is why you instead want to use your own starter now
against Starly. Deal with him thus, by first using whatever current stat-
changing moves you have for a turn or two, then take out Starly.

Once your Rival sends out his starter, retaliate with multiple stat-
lowering moves (if you are using Turtwig, then merely attack). Once your starter
is taken out of the match, your ideal next choice will be your own Starly for
two reasons - the first is that using Quick Attack, you can avert undesirable
results and get a fast hit in. The second is that if you are facing Turtwig, and
Starly is at least Level 9, you can use it's Wing Attack for super-effective
damage against Turtwig. Either way, Rival's starter should already be battered
enough by now, so take it out.

After you have obtained victory and your Rival runs off, head straight
north between two sections of forest to face off against the Youngster Michael.

_________________
Youngster Michael
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
The first part of the battle should not be too difficult - just send
someone in and rape Tomoki's Michael to hell and back. No, it is the next part
that you should be worried about, as Zubat is Poison and Flying, two type
attributes that you should not yet have any attacks that are super-effective
against.

Additionally, Zubat can use Supersonic, which can confuse your own
Pokémon and cause it to attack itself. To counter this, I suggest you bring in
somebody with a good attack and speed that can take out Zubat in two hits,
before it can use Leech Life to restore itself, or Supersonic to pit your
Pokémon against itself.

Finally done with the battle, head around clockwise from Tomoki to find
a Pokéball lying on the ground. Pick it up to obtain an item Poké Ball, then
jump off of the nearby ledge. Now, head east along the path and up the first
flight of staircases, and you will encounter Youngster Dallas.
