a,e,i,o,u, and sometimes y are all reffered to as vowels.
As previously stated, all english words must have a vowel, or else it is reffered to as gibberish. Unless there is some secret word that can never be said because it has no vowel and will create the apocalypse, i do not know of any words without vowels.

American English differs from standard English in a number of ways. But basically, it's still English.

And I never knew Y didn't automatically count as a vowel in English. I'm surprised.

I think it is because of the sound. It is not open like the Danish Y, because it is pronouned like why.
