I live in California, and I am American. I was born in Poland though. Why do you ask lol? Because I said its the fall of America? Our situation does seem to continuously get worse, and it does seem similar to the falls of other great empires, such as the Romans.

Maybe Iran will come in and occupy our country, and help us fix it. lol You how how pissed we would be if that happened? Thats pretty much what we do with the rest of the world. We assume they want the great nation of the USA to come in, take over, and fix them, and build a McDonalds with a coca cola fountain.

I meant they = automotive companies.

I hope they get a fatty bailout...I'm assuming they will, because I invested in GM a few days ago.

means I hope the automotive companies like GM get a fatty bailout.

This is the beginning of the fall of the American Empire.

Oh, don't be so dramatic! Its bad, but not 'fall of American Empire' bad. The whole world is hurting, not just America. Heck, a great deal of countries are worse off than America! The dollar has actually gained strength because of all of the damage done to the Euro from this crisis.

car factories are great for turning out tanks and hummers during wartime. quoting chopstick bob

your right about that in fact ww2 was won because of this and sadly we still need to make these things. Its not like you can get them at a costco.

The thing that is killing them is the union contracts. Toyota pays its factory workers(on average, including pension and benefits package) about $45/hour. The big 3, on average, including pension and benefits package, pay their factory workers about $75/hour.

In a very competitive market, that won't cut it.

I don't think that they should be aloud the bailout money because they wouldn't be in this hole in the first place if they got more business. Toyota and Honda will never need to be bailed out because they make cheap fuel efficient cars. Thats what ford, chrystler, and GM should do...i'm only 16 and can come up with that, i guess those companies should hire some new brains

Here's a good one with Mitt Romney giving his opinion. His father was the CEO of American Motors, so he is closely ited to this issue. Good read.

The thing is, that car manufacturers constantly think that they need to make bigger cars, with bigger engines XD. Its not true. You don't need a van carrying 8 people travelling at 250 mph. Instead of making 5 litre engines make em 2.5. Thats what the chinese/japanese do and they make vans to hold 8-9 people. American car dealerships truely don't need this money, it would just be a good thing to have in order to create more bigger cars that no one rlly needs. I hope that they dont get the bail out, because its money going to a useless cause. Either the car company is gonna go bank rupt, or its gonna just stay the same. Its not like 200 billion $$ is gonna allow them to send out cars like no tomorow.. which is of course what there saying its for..

I absolutely agree with flispki. Just look at history. Britain held the reigns for 100 years. The Dutch for 100 years. The Spanish for 100 years. Those aren't all exact of course, but the point is, Imperialism rises and falls in 100 year cycles. We've had our 100 years, or at least we're close to it....

No, but when guys need a self-esteem boost, they go to their Hummers and their trucks. Simple as that. That's why Ford and GM have stayed in business so long.

We're already in debt up to our eyeballs. Our children's children's children will still be paying it off. These companies need to restructure and produce products that people want to buy in order to remain competitive.

Making mistakes should be painful so we learn to avoid making the same ones over and over again. Take away too much of the pain, and we might get to a point where we don't care enough to avoid them.

Why is it that all these rich fat cats are all for free unrestricted capitalism until things go bad, then all of the sudden they want the government to dole out money to help keep them afloat?

Well, I'll give you my opinion, but keep in mind I'm not 100% informed on the subject.
I think that if they expect a government bailout, that they should be willing to make some concessions in order to make sure things will begin to run a little more smoothly. I know I may be irritating some people by saying this, but the unions do have to budge a little bit. If they could take a small pay hit, it would help the industry.
Also, again with full knowledge I might upset some people, these companies made the choices which put them in these situations. They have made cars which, in my opinion, are inferior products; they are not good on gas, they cost more than other makes to repair, and are more often subject to recalls. In a presentation I did last year, my research group discovered that Ford had surpressed a recall because the lawsuits (for injuries and fatalities) were cheaper than the recall.
I know a lot of people and a lot of families depend on their jobs with these companies, but the fact is their business practices have been corrupt for ages. If these companies are to survive due to a government bailout, the American public should be privy to shares, discounts, rebates or benefits resulting (since their tax dollars went towards this plan), and they must become companies who are worthy of the people's trust and patronage.
