Like I say about ALL extremist groups: They are disgusting, vile, piles of garbage. But they have the right to free speech, even if we don't like their views.
It's only the most vicious, venomous, and hateful anti-gay church in all of America. Fred Phelps is their leader, he's a real piece of work. Phelps is about as warm, forgiving, and compassionate as Satan, Hitler, and Stalin, all rolled into one.
Look them up on youtube, if you really want to see them. These are the ones who protest at the funerals for our soldiers killed in the war, basically saying they are happy the soldier died. At the funeral mind you, with family and loved ones there. This exceeds my concept of free speech, and it exceeds my limit for bile. They are simply foul.
I can vaguely remember those people... although, extremists all taste alike, strangely.
MudPuddle... I think it exceeds most people's concept of free speech. Some people are just so single-minded that they are willing to abuse something great like free speech to harass people who DEFINATELY have other things on their minds. Personally, it makes me sick even thinking about people saying at a funeral 'I'm happy he's dead', unless he was some sort of a criminal. Foul indeed.
This exceeds my concept of free speech, and it exceeds my limit for bile.
A good friend of mine died in Iraq (Sean Cardelli, http://www.pfcseancardelli.com/) Even then, I still believe WBC has the right to free speech... as vile as they are.
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'
Not as much a problem with free speech, they seem to lack etics of any kind doing stuff like that. You should only use the right of free speech as long as you know when to shut it.
What is this obamas church or somthing? Can someone please specify.
No but that would be a good thread. These are the people who protested the soldiers funeral. There game for killing all the homosexuals not very nice people...
Me to i mean i don't support gay marriage, and even in the bible while it talks about how bad it is, it says in more places to love your brother, and be tolerant, ect. What makes me mad as well is a lot of people take these people to represent christianity...
Westboro Baptist Church and Rev. Phelps represent the worst perversion of religious teachings. It takes a great deal of fear and anger to twist teachings of love and compassion into a message of hatred and cruelty. I do not comprehend how anyone can be so mean, hurtful, and vicious, towards others, and call themselves a "good christian."
One of the best examples of how people have countered Phelps and his hate squad happened in Laramie Wyoming at the trial of Matthew Sheppard's murderers. Three young men attacked Sheppard for no other reason than he was gay. They beat him senseless and left him tied to a fence in the middle of nowhere. He died of his injuries and exposure. Phelps and his gang showed up to protest the trial. So a bunch of young people who went to college with Matt created angel costumes with very high suspended wings. They took up position around the enclosure Phelps and his goons were required to be. The high wings obscured them and their signs from view. A really good movie on this is The Laramie Project.
Learning to cope with the existence of such people requires a great deal of courage, and a sense of humor doesn't hurt either. To this end, I recommend the following parody site.
