I've read a few Farside strips, and although they are quite funny, it didn't inspire me to rush out and buy the books.
Calvin and Hobbes on the other hand are just superb! You could build your whole life around Calvin's philosophy (sorry, can't spell that lol). Although he seems a very selfish little boy, he would clearly do anything for his best friend. Hobbes is who he turns to when trying to figure out the meaning of life, it's Hobbes who bears the brunt of Calvin's temper, but always manages to defuse the situation.
All children have fertile imaganations..haven't we all sat inside a cardboard box at some time in our life and imagined we're flying to somewhere exotic??...but Calvin is the eternal child, who lives in the most wonderful world with his best friend.
it's by gary larson and it's a comic of strange and awkward situtions. like one there's a guy on a desert island with one palm tree. the guy is writing "SOS" on a paper and a coconut falls on and destroys his bottle to send the "sos"
I don't believe that the two are exactly comparable other than the fact that they are comics. Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side have very different brands of humor. I like them both in different ways. They represent a time period when comics weren't just faces talking to each other on a paper.
calvin and hobbes all the way, but i like how both waterson and larson don't over-promote the comics like garfield is. it leaves the comics with some dignity.
