I started a new game of Biological and found it to be much harder than I could remember. I then realized that I was using a different build than last time and discovered something that might be common sense to most of you.

In the beginning, a speed or a poison build is absolutely horrible. Shadow Blend requires you to be level 10 and while you're in Zone 1 or 2 (especially if you're a Heroic player like me), speed is probably NOT what you should focus on.

Poison is incredibly slow. The whole concept of poison is damage over time, so you may expect it to take a while, but while you're starting out your STR is too low for your effects to do much. I may be wrong, but say your STR is 80 (which is pretty impressive for a beginner). Stacking up 65% of 80 over and over (52) is not be the way to go if you're facing enemies with health well over one or two thousand and dishing out damage in the 200-300 field (see twisted experiment / Warden).

In the beginning, the brute force build, the one where you basically spam Destroy and Immobilize during Predator form - will probably show faster results and may keep you alive longer.

Once you get into zone 2 and 3, the poison build shows more potential. Your STR is higher and you got to invest in more passive abilities to boost your damage. Still, I urge you to wait. I found this about as effective as the speed build.

The speed build at this point was not too bad. It was certainly hard to play as you only have so many ability points and Crystalize was your main stunning spell. You will spend all of your time plotting out for one huge nuke, one small nuke, and try to live during the time in between. I found myself panicking whenever the enemy actually land a blow on me though, as my vitality was not as high as I would like.

Again, the brute force build was the simplest. Break is unlocked as you move forth to get Immobilize (your next most power STR based attack from destroy) so you don't have to put in two ability points just for this stun. Your important abilities generally do not require you to invest in things you will not use and further save your points (unlike shadow blend or crystalize).

Zone 4 is when I personally believe the poison build outweighs the rest. There are plenty of equipment to boost your poison piercing and the final boss (the Hydra) has Fire Claws extremely weak against it. Your STR should now be high enough to have significant DOT damage or for Infect to display its powers.

Speed starts to improve and you will find it an equal against the previous champ (brute force). By now, you should have most of your passive skills maxed by now. Every level up will only have you further investing in these abilities for now. Brute force, in my opinion, is only increasing in damage and has largely remained the same as from the beginning.

Zone 5 is when you should probably start using Speed. Not only are your enemies likely to miss you, your damage is now comparable to poison. Once you unlock your newest character, give all of her clothes to Sonny. Sharp Skills on her equipment results in insane critical hits. If you are worried about HP, replace the gloves, shoes, and pants with Android parts. When you finally beat the Mayor and find a Death Sentence, you can go back in using the Specialist's set as the vitality in this weapon is 66, bring your HP over 3000 (enough to live through the early blitz).

I conclude by saying that the Speed Build is your best option in the end. Brute Force peaked at Zone 4. Poison will peak by Zone 5. Even if Speed doesn't do more damage, the bonus of NOT getting hit wins. The Biological Build will have you exploring pretty much every single ability on the "tech tree". Sticking with a single build throughout the entire game is not an advantage. You must evolve and respec at least twice.

The whole thing is up for debate. I could easily be wrong here, but I found playing poison or speed early on near impossible. Poison is okay mid game and it took all the way to Zone 5 until Speed shows you just how powerful it is.

Alright, I don't like poison builds, but I will try out the speed build. Right now I'm making a vitality-speed-strength build and ignoring instinct completely. Is that fine?

Other than withdrawal, I don't see any moves making use of Instinct, so yes, ignore instinct completely. If you're trying out a speed build, I recommend moving pretty much all your points into speed. Your shadow blend will multiply each speed point by 5 (when maxed). Vitality and STR can be covered by your equipment. I'm using the Specialist set with Death Sentence. I have around 3.6k hp and 125 focus.

Sharp Skills (which should also be maxed), Shadow Blend, and Slash will deal 11k damage even to the Mayor. Since Shadow Blend lasts 2 turns, you can follow it up with another Slash, doing around 7k damage.
