Well, their appearance, their rarity, their gender, their lineages... Actually there are a lot of differences, but whether they are relevant or not is up to the individual users.

The incubator is an image generated to display all of your dragons. It is usually used to link to your entire scroll, so you can post just that instead of posting all your sprites.

It's rare. People go "ohhhhhhhh, shiny!!" at them. That's all.

An alt is an alternative version of one of the more common dragons. Currently only two breeds have alternative versions, which can only be obtained through breeding.
do different dragons grow at different rates?
Not by breeds. Individual eggs may hatch at different times despite identical stats, but besides that, it's all the same.
can you trade eggs and dragons?

Technically, yes. By synchronizing the abandoning, so that one abandons while the other frantically refreshes the URL used to pick up that dragon once it gets abandoned. I can explain this in more detail if needed.
But there is no specific trade function.
what is the most common dragon/egg?
It varies. For a while it was the two greens and the blacks. These days it appears to be whit, pink or purple. Basically, if you see a row of them on the the AP (abandoned page), they're pretty common.
what iis the rarest dragon/egg?
I think it might be the neglected dragons. Or event eggs/hatchlings/dragons, like the Christmas or vampire breeds.
But technically you are not supposed to ask.
There isn't a "most" common, but all the non rares are considered common.
Nah, some are considered uncommon as well.
