I'm sorry. The rant you just planned out is for not. I know the apostrophe in the title is misplace. However, if, for some reason, the title did not make your blood boil, this thread may be important.

Why is the apostrophe so misused today? Why is it that people insist on ignorance of this important part of grammar? I've been seeing it more and more. Why? Is it because of the internet? What can we do to help this little punctuation mark? Does it even matter? I have decided to place this in World Events rather then The Tavern as the apostrophe suffers ignorance on a global scale.

FAQ:

I know not the way's of the apostrophe's, will you please teach me?
I would be happy to. (Deliberate misuse of apostrophes in the quote.)

You do know that by trying to protect it you are only halting the evolution of language, right?
If language is evolving into a repulsively nonsensical mass of words and pictograms, I say halt it.

I agree with you, but what can I do about it?
Correct it. Ask store owners to change their signs. lead a protest. Create pointless forum threads. In short, be a general nuisance to the point that people around you find themselves better off using the apostrophe correctly rather then dealing with you, but not to the point you get punched in the face.

So, if you agree that we should try to help the apostrophe I'd love to know. If you think it's a waste of time, that's even better, as I would love to debate this with you.

Proper grammar is important. But do you really expect people to use apostrophes in the correct manner on this a text based site?

I can understand your annoyance at it's misuse in real life (ie not on AG) but to lead protests and being a general nuisance won't really change much and is more of a hassle than the end result deserves.

I find it annoying when people get criticised for their spelling on here up to a point, I think it's much a do about nothing.

this sound's like such a great idea. I never thought of it before but it' is rather annoying. Grammar in general is going down the drain. I cant' think of the time i spelled out be right back or talk to you later. So i think i might's just's start's anoying's people's about's it's. i decided to just make random apostrophe's and S's because there where no word's that i could do that on purpose. But i had to be annoying

No, but they should.

Well, it might make me feel better.

I find it annoying when people get criticised for their spelling on here up to a point
I can't spell at all. Without spellcheck, I'm useless.

Too be honest Blissinpergatory, I could barely understand your post, though I get the point.

If you actually knew your grammar you would know that ''it's'' indicates possession, in this instance i was refferring to the misuse of apostrophes therefore my grammar was correct.

No, but they should.

Why should they? This is a site with many different users of different age groups and languages. How can you expect someone who is not fluent in English or who is very young to be able to use apostrophes correctly.

For older fluent english users i don't belive that apostrophes are a particularly big problem. If you can understand the meaning of the word then it's fine in my opinion.

sorry woody but "it's" is used for " it is" or "it has", but "its" was correctly possessive, thank you i do know my grammar. it was used correctly here

If you can understand the meaning of the word then it's fine in my opinion.

i apologize for the double post!

Sorry, but it's is used solely as a contraction. (It is, it has.) Look it up. Awkward.

To your other points, I disagree. While I don't mind slip ups, I do mind general ignorance of the use of the apostrophe.

Looking to try to create a world with better grammar isn't a waste of time, but there are far more important issues.

Protip: Don't post on this thread anymore if it's such a waste of your time.

I am not disputing your right to post it on the forums, but when you consider the calibre of some of the other threads in this section of the forums i wonder if it isn't better off in the tavern.
