Is it really true that the sun is going to stop coming up and the ozone layer is going to be gone so all us humans are just going to drop dead on the ground during 2012 by this one guy talking junk on the history channel. My friend told me today at school.
Ehm. Most likely not. The sun won't stop coming up unless the Earth stops spinning, and well, that would leave us all pretty screwed, but it's unlikely to happen in 2012.
And there is already threads about similar things...
Disapointment at the history channel. The mayan caendar stuff says the earth will change on the 21st december and the earth will not end 4 days before christmas.
Humm. don't belive that it will be the End of the world in 2012. Just that the Earth is going to DIE (if i can say that) someday. It's not like before, beautiful healthy earth. No, now, ugly and poluted.
I wouldn't worry too much about it, no one can tell the future and just becouse some ancient calendar runs out then doesn't mean much of anything. Perhaps they thought that they would just make a new one a little closer towards the date itself or the rest was lost, but I think 2012 will be just like any other year, some things will happen but I am quite sure we shall get to see New Year's day 2013.
The reason why the this Mayan prediction of Earth's Destruction is so freaky, is because they had their own calendar of the years. Their calendar stopped at 2012, and they couldn't add anymore years because their race had been wiped out.
But surely you don't believe any of this? The only true prediction of Earth's destruction is when Sol has reached its death, but that's in a billion years. Not even our children's 10^1000 children will live to experience it. And by that time, we will have found PLENTY of ways to escape the sun, and live on other inhabitable planets, occupied by younger suns.
Hey Zoph, I found one! Yes, I could've found it before I posted, but I might have forgotten what to type... >_> Anyway, here it is. It's pretty deep in there.
No one knows if the world will end in 2012, the Sumerian's calender ends on December 12, 2012, and that's what bought up the theory. We just have to wait and find out. I think there's very little chance that the world will just stop functioning, this is just similar to other predictions that were false, such as the millenium bug.
And by that time, we will have found PLENTY of ways to escape the sun, and live on other inhabitable planets, occupied by younger suns.
Ehm, humans will die out much sooner than the Earth, it is highly unlikely that humans will last until the end of time. In the past 200 years we've done more damage than volcanoes, earthquakes and other natural disasters have done to Earth since Earthlife's existance.
Back to the subject, the reason for the fame of the claim that the world will end in 2012 is because the Sumerians showed incredible intelligence such as rocks with pictures of 10 spherical planets and a spherical Sun, this was an odd discovery since we found out that the Earth is not in the center of the universe recently when compared to the 150,000 years we've existed on Earth, the belief that the Earth is flat was also recently proved false. The way the Sumerians knew all this back then is amazing to us and makes us take everything they did seriously.
