THE WORLD IS FLAT... just kidding Has anyone else heard of there website its so funny they believe that there is an ice wall around the world and that all the worlds governments are protecting it from other people see it. Now you may be thinking "but the worlds governments are unstable and couldn't possibly protect such a large wall" well the answer to you question is... they are just pretending to be unstable so people won't believe they could protect the wall. They also don't believe in gravity there theory is that the earth is constantly moved up with all the other plants and that pushes us down. What are your thoughts?
Aha the famous FES. Though they are frequently battered in public however they do have some very inticate ideas and theiries to back up their (absurd) beliefs. Acceleration upwards causing gravity etc. Then againt they believe the sun and moon are both 32 miles in diameter. I like how the United Nations use the flat earth map on the flag. Or so Charles Johnson thought. The proof is in the Bible I suppose. (again according to Johnson.
Hm. This is interesting. The science behind it makes a fairly good amount of sense, but it's very, very, unlikely. And then the reasoning behind why the conspirators are doing it makes no sense whatsoever. Many of the people arguing for and against it are, while certainly not experts, intelligent. I doubt that there are any people who actually believe in it; I think it's more of one those "You can't prove me wrong, nanananananaaaaa" types of things. Like the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
Real or not, it's a good place to practice logical arguing, pointing out mathematical flaws, and generally having fun.
Well, say the Earth is flat (I know it's not, but let's play along for a minute), why would the government's care about us knowing or not, when it was for so long believed to be fact? There is no profit to be made, unless, all the world's governments really have money in the globe manufacturing buisiness and want us all to believe the Earth is round so we'll buy globes. Now that's a conspiracy for you. Oh well, it's funny the kind of things that people will believe in, or at least claim to believe in.
I was look around the website and they said that under the flat earth there is either hell, rocks or an elephant and on top of the elephant is a turtle. *trying to contain laughter*
Isn't that the Terry Pratchet story "Discworld" where the planet sits on back of fout elephants. And the Bertrand Russell story from Steven Hawkings book "A well-known scientist once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady at the back of the room got up and said: "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise." The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, "What is the tortoise standing on?" "You're very clever, young man, very clever," said the old lady. "But it's turtles all the way down!"
Hindu's also apparently believe that the eath rested on an elephants back and then the elephant rested on a tortoise.
TheListMan, I specifically said the science, not the psychology or plausibility. At least it sounds correct. Scroll down to Physics in my last link or see here.
Nor am I saying that the science makes perfect sense, but there are some very, very good arguments put up. It's putting a scientific spin on religion, which is something I haven't seen until now.
Well it's quite interesting, really. It's obviously quite ridiculous, but at the same time, not 100% impossible. There is about a 0,2% that it's true, but it's certainly interesting to read about. After all, it's not some 12 year old making a joke, these are actual mathematicians and... smart people showing theories.
And about the benefits... it's probably financial benefits. Being the only one who know how the world really works, it would give a lot of knowledge like for example knowing the logic of oil and diamonds. In a quite simple theory.
The Mayans said that the world would end the 21th of december, 2012. Does this mean that if global warming were to melt the ice walls, would we all fall? It does seem like water doesn't flow out because of the walls, so if they disappear...
Or for instance, if the world would stop moving up, their theory of gravity, the whole world would bounce of in a terrible speed...
I'm absolutely loving the fact that they've managed to describe it so well and find reason for so much. Perfect for reusing as one of 'em Terry Pratchet-like settings.
But believing in conspiracy theories aren't exactly my thing.
I wasted about 45 minutes reading random stuff on their website. Pretty funny. Just look for anything posted by flyingspaghettimonster and you can generally find all the holes in their theory.
First let me state that this is funny. An ice wall? Is the world controlled by penguins?
Secondly, the gravity theory is just dumb. They could have come up with a better reasoning. You said first that we are constantly moving up. If this were the case then we would have no gravity. We would need acceleration to imitate gravity. So if we were in fact accelerating up. we would be moving faster and faster and faster. There is a limit to how fast we can go, the speed of light. So this gravity would stop at one point. Also, where is this energy that is pushing us coming from? It would take immense amounts of energy to get us moving faster and faster, and this would become even more difficult as we approach the speed of light.
The only way gravity could be created is with circular motion. The centripetal force would imitate gravity. So we would need to be flying around something. Like if you took a bucket of water and swung it in a circle up over your head and back down, the water would not come out because you created a centripetal force, which acts like gravity for the base of the bucket. The flat earth would need to do the same thing. But I don't see any ropes attached in the middle of nowhere. So there would need to be a force holding us to something. So this kind of leads back to the fact that we would need gravity to imitate gravity for celestial objects.
