Well not really, you would have to know the indiviual person. Beacuse you would not know what they are thinking. But really, most of them are brainwashed, or devoted. They belive they are doing the ultimate good, for their people & god.
Just think of Kamikaze pilots. If the faith is great enough, there is no reason to be afraid. It has always been a part of most religions that a person who die in battle will go to heaven. Some might have hit their head or misinterprenting those guidelines, thinking that if they de in the battle for something(though not a real fight), they will go to heaven. Sadly it makes little sense, as suicide is against most religions.
I belive the first recorded suicide attack was in the 14th century, where 140 templars sunk themselves in their own ship in order to kill 10 times as many muslims. But I am sure that it happened before that. Suicidal attacks are motivated by pathology,religion,nationalism idealism etc. If the belive in the cause is strong enough then sacrificing ones self is not seen as important in the grand scheme of things. Aside from kamikaze style attacks in WW2 the first mass use of ground suicidal attacks was in Vietnam, where with Chinese training and equipment, the North Vietnamese set up actual suicide squads, whose aim was to rush into enemy HQs and blow them up.
Well the whole thing about "jihad" comes from a section of the Q'ran that can be interpreted as saying that all Muslims should fight the "infidels". Another section can be interpreted as saying that if you die in jihad, you will get 72 virgins in heaven, or something like that.
It most likely originates from a variety of places and peoples. As someone else here said, if someone believes in a cause highly enough, they will be willing to sacrifice their life in such a way. It also proves to be a good tactic, one person dies and while doing so kills several other people, but it's also highly effective in combating enemy morale. If the enemy is so willing to die for something, can you really defeat them. Suicide bombers are probably about as old as bombs and suicide attacks are probably about as old as war, most likely we'll never know who started it.

Well the suicide bombers I know, think they will go to heaven and have lots of women for themselves. They're most of the time fooled by their commandant, telling them about faith, after life and honor.

Terrorism has always been used by men, and will always be. When you have nothing, you can still sacrifice yourself. Even if, well, you could also be pal with your neighboour, even if he's protestant/catholic/jew/gay/american, etc...
these days we hear news about suicide bombers in Iraq or a little in Afghanistan & Pakistan. now a little word about muslims. as there are many branches from christianity also there are many branches from islam. Al-Qaeda leaders and members are from an extremist branch which called Wahhaby. stick in mind that all muslims are not Wahhabies. all muslims believe that Adam, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Jesus,... and Muhammad are all prophets and any one who believe in god and one of his prophets is not an Infidel. but Wahhabies believe that American and other soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan and even other branches of Islam are infidels and wahhabies with brain wash and every other methodes make people to wear bomb jacket and ...
in Islam, suicide in any case and for any reason is forbidden and it's even worse than murdering.
so let's see who are infidels terrorists, Wahhabies or other branches of islam?
