If you want to know about the battle of Berlin read 'Berlin' by the historian Antony Beevor. He is very middle of the road and gives a decent unbiased view on the battle. It is not a difficult read either, for a purely historical book it is surprisingly accessible. I highly recommend it to anyone studying that period of WW2.

Ah, my capitol you would like to know during WWII? It's actually pretty easy, here it goes: Starting on 16 January 1945, the Red Army breached through the German front as a result of the Vistulaâ"Oder Offensive and rapidly advanced westward as fast as 30â"40 kilometres a day, through East Prussia, Lower Silesia, East Pomerania, and Upper Silesia, temporarily halting on a line 60 kilometres east of Berlin along the Oder River. During the offensive, two Soviet fronts (army groups) attacked Berlin from the east and south, while a third overran German forces positioned north of Berlin. The Battle in Berlin lasted from late 20 April 1945 until the morning of 2 May and was one of the bloodiest battles in history. The first defensive preparations at the outskirts of Berlin were on 20 March, when the newly appointed commander of the Army Group Vistula, General Gotthard Heinrici, correctly anticipated that the main Soviet thrust would be made over the Oder River. Before the main battle in Berlin commenced, the Soviets managed to encircle the city as a result of the smaller Battles of the Seelow Heights and Halbe. During 20 April 1945, the 1st Belorussian Front led by Marshal Georgy Zhukov started shelling Berlin's city centre, while Marshal Ivan Konev's 1st Ukrainian Front had pushed in the north through the last formations of Army Group Centre. The German defences were mainly led by Helmuth Weidling and consisted of several depleted, badly equipped, and disorganised Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS divisions, as well as many Volkssturm and Hitler Youth members. Within the next days, the Soviets were rapidly advancing through the city and were reaching the city centre, conquering the Reichstag on 30 April after fierce fighting. Before the battle was over, German Führer Adolf Hitler and many of his followers committed suicide. The city's defenders finally surrendered on 2 May. However, fighting continued to the northwest, west and southwest of the city until the end of the war in Europe on 8 May (9 May in the Soviet Union) as German units fought westward so that they could surrender to the Western Allies rather than to the Soviets. I hope this helps chap, I hope you get an A

Unfortunately, many of the Russian records are still closed. So there is little information about Soviet massacres or brutality. Don't get me wrong, the Soviets were the good guys, but they were awfully brutal throughout Europe... especially Berlin.

When you look at the brutality they suffered at the hands of the Germans can you blame them? They say the most powerful human emotion is renge and it certainly showed in this battle.

In Berlin, the average woman was raped 3 times. Tens of thousands of women children were executed for no reason other than being in Berlin. There is no excuse for what the Soviets did. Stalin actually encouraged rape and murder. The brutality of the Soviets was beyond excusable.

Were the Nazis any kinder? Most of the rape was due to all the Soviet propaganda of how the Nazis had 'violated the motherland'. To the Nazis the Russians were sub human slavs and to them it was a war of extermination. When they rolled through Russia they murdered thousands too. Dont forget the amount of Soviet civilians who also perished. I am not trying to defend rape and murder, but just saying it is not at all surprising the soviets reacted in this way, especially after Stalingrad.

True Woody, we had beleived that the Soviets were lower class than us Germans, but the revenge of the Red Army, and them being told not to retreat or they would face excecution when they returned home, or if they did..

Let me just clarify. I do not belive that the red army's policies or the actions of their men were morally acceptable, but i am not surprised that they did it after Stalingrad.

True, I mean, what is one to do, it's either die fighting, or die back at home because you were a coward, either way, you're in a jam.

Of course the Russians were angry. The Germans did no better. Might I recall Red Square? Soldiers slaughtered like animals and the injured executed on scene.

To add on to the Fuhrer's death he took cyanide pills and simultaneously fired a Walther P38 inside his mouth.

Russians were also pushed hard by Stalin, extremely and at a last stand in Berlin before the Russian troops reached the Reichstag the Fuhrer's last order was for all the old, the young, the weak, to stand up an fight for their Fatherland. The Russians killed any German with a gun. Then on May 1st, 1945 Adolf Hitler commited suicide. I am also German.
