Whoever said walri has no idea when to use that plural form!

It is only ever used for nouns that are or were derived from Latin nouns of the 2nd declension, masculine. Those would invariably end in -us but not every word that ends in -us is Latin. Walrus is not a Latin word. Therefore the plural is "walruses".
