Well, today one of my friends got into this topic, saying that racist comments should be illegal. Now, I am completely against racism, but I feel the opposite way. I believe that no matter what opinion someone has, they should be allowed to express it.
I agree. Its called freedom of speech. Even if it were banned you cant stop someone from being racist. It seems to be like treating only the symptoms of the disease and not the cause.
I agree somewhat, but it does not mean that if you have "freedom of speach" you have the right to brake the law. (I know speach and law are diffrent, but you get what I mean) I think the only big diffrence between the two is that it is moraly wrong to be racist. In witch I mean, if you swear at the teacher, there are conseqences. Why is that never regarded as the same as being racist issues? You still had "freedom of speach" and the freedom to say whatever you wanted. Yet why are you punished? Therefor it is a right and wrong thing.
It seems to be like treating only the symptoms of the disease and not the cause.
Often yes, sometimes maybe not, and it's the maybe not that will provide the most interesting discussion here.
One might wish to establish what relationship discriminatory utterances might have and the cultural movements and behaviors that they underpin. We wish to quell the behaviours and sometimes legislature is a valid method of achieving a cultural disapproval of something that is shown to be detrimental to society.
