I think it was conceived as a very good way to show up the Kansas educational board. And it is the best example of an "inteligent designer" I have yet seen.
It was created in response to the Kansas state Edication Board passing a law making it mandatory to teach "Inteligent design" in school (they weren't allowed to use the word God apparently). It is a parody religion. Since the education stestem couldn't mention God. The FSM was created by Bobby Henderson as an alternative in protest at the decision. Basically to show how rediculous it is. THey believe in the divinity of pirates and that the lack of pirates since the 1800's is a major cause of global warming. (again taking the piss out of the correlation implies causation view that natural catastrophies are caused by global warming).
Astonishingly, none of the senders seem to have grasped the fact that it supposed to be a parody of religion. Of course no one thinks it's the real deal, even the creators.
I've heard crazier stuff. They aren't harming anyone plus it's called freedom of speech. Let the Pastafarians do their thing. All hail the Flying Spagghetti Monster!

Ignorance of the concept of satire is not restricted to theists. Although obviously you would think they would be far more likely to attack Pastafarianism.
