if u want a good series of sci-fi books you might want to try the saga of the seven suns, by kevin j anderson.
the books in order are:
hidden empire
a forest of stars
horizon storms
scatted suns
of fire and night
metal swarm
and last but not least,
the ashes of worlds
its far future i would say (???) cant be sure tho.
have many little plots and ploys in larger plots and ploys which inter twine with even larger plots and ploys.
you have many different fractions and races. which i will list now:
Humans: the hansa - made of many different planets offering many different things to the hansa. the hansa are basically business/trade orientated.
roamers - gypsie people made of many different clans.
therons - live on a single planet covered in sentient trees. the planet is called theroc.
confederation - made of many of the roamer clans as well as abbandoned hansa colines and theroc.
ildrians: the resistant - are ildrians who got pulled away from the main thism ( a mental link combining all ildrians together) in to a second thism which was controlled by a crazed ildrian.
main body - controled by the rightful mage imperator holds the main thism together.
feroes: are a sentient fire or an entity made of fire. lives in suns and fights everyone.
the wentals: sentient water. found by a roamer who then joined with the wentals. spread all accross the spiral arm( the section of the galaxy that the books are based in)
the vendari: are the sentient trees of theroc which is were the therons live.
hydrogues are beings made of hydrogen. live in gas planets and gas giants. waging war with the spiral arm.
klikiss: are an insecoid race. made of many hives and subbreeds. the hives fight each other and then only one hive is alive.
klikiss robots are robots which were made by the klikiss. allies with the hydrogues. are killing all humans to "save" the human robots.
