Sadly hedgehog populations in Britain have halved in the last 15 years. 15,000 are killed on roads each year (in the 1990's 100,000 per year was common so it has improved).

Badgers are the only natural predator of the hedgehog because they are the only animal strong enough to prise open a rolled up hedgehog, However foxes have developed the technique of urinating on them to encourage them to open.

Hedghehogs have a high immunity to poison. They canwithstand a bite from an adder. And are quite resistant to chloroform. Hedgehogs have been seen chewing on pisonous toad skins and coating their spines with the toxic mousse. However the smell of face cream, furniture polish and shoes (among other things) will stimulate the same behaviour.

The word "heyghoge" was first used in 1450. The average adult hedgehog has 5,000 spines. They are hollow and very strong. You could pick a hedgehog up by a single spine.
