Well, I would like to know how Chinese food is like in the West from people that live there. I would like to learn about their POVs. Cause I've heard alot how people hate chinese food, its soggy, deep fried with lots of oil, and well generally lousy. And the names that the chefs gives the good is ridiculous! Like chop something.
This is a story for example. I read it in reader's digest or some other magazine. The reporter went to a chinese restaurant. The chef said his dish was traditional and famous back in a province of China, dating back to the Qing Dynasty. ( For all those that do not know about the Qing Dynasty, it was the last dynasty to rule China, from 1600+ till 1911.)Anyway, when the reporter went to China to check it out, the officials and people there did not know anything about the dish! It was a fake.
Well so just to repeat, what are your feelings about Chinese food, do you like it? Real Chinese food isn't the fried noodly takeaway stuff I usually see portrayed in American culture.

hmm yeah so it seems like it's lousy in the US but better in Australia. And dacer, they do eat dog! But not in all parts of Asia, not Singapore for sure. But china, for sure and maybe korea. My friend who is from korea was forced to eat dog meat by his grandad back in South Korea. The North Koreans do eat dog meat, its in a book by a North Korean Boy who escaped. It's called "this is paradise". haha devoidless got a spelling error. Jk, not everyone is perfect after all...
I've been to Australia and the chinese food there...
Again a matter of knowing where to look. Hint: Chinatown is not always the best place.
My main point of comparison however was the yum cha. In Sydney especially. Of course a local from Asia is free to disagree since I'm merely speaking from the viewpoint of an Australian.
I also have a Chinese background, even though I live in America both of my parents grew up in China and most real Chinese food is not like the one's most people in the U.S. have. In my opinion, authentic Chinese food is not as fattening as the American version of Chinese. And I also agree with nichodemus, to me it is not as flavorful either, but the point I'm trying to get at here is that the U.S. chinese food they have and the food in China are basically two different things.
Well it would seem to me that Chinese fod in the west is highly Americanized to appeal to more people out here espically because in the states a lot of people are landlocked and not used to eating seafood and such, but as for me I do like Chinese food, it seems to be good to me so yeah...
Not all chinese food sucks. Ok fine maybe they did copy the japanese in there food but they have awesome fish ideas and the duplings are great. ( to bad I forgot the restruant name but it is near L.A.)
in china practically nothing there was on the take away menus in Australia, but i only tried southern Chinese dishes. also Chinese food i had was never simple. Except McDonald's.
Ah, Chinese food in the West. I could talk about it for a long time. First off, Chinese food is extremely different from region to region. Because mostly Cantonese, Sichuan, and Hunan people have immigrated, these cuisines are heavily represented internationally. On the other hand, my family comes from Northern China, from the Beijing and Shandong area. Unlike that sweet or spicy stuff Panda Express offers, up North we eat things like lamb kebabs, raw garlic, and dumplings.
In my opinion, authentic Chinese food is not as fattening as the American version of Chinese.
I guarantee you that it is, but with a caveat. If you've been to China before, you'll know that basically everyone cooks stuff with animal fat so it isn't wasted. Admittedly, it tastes incredible, but it definitely isn't healthy. However, because Chinese people don't tend to eat too much (they do drink a lot; they could put an Irishman to shame), it is somewhat counterbalanced.
In short, go to China, and try authentic regional food. Even if it's bugs, snakes, donkey, or dog, don't complain about it unless it's stinky tofu (ultrafermented tofu that smells like a garbage dump).
PS: Bugs are good, snake reminds me of chicken, donkey tastes nasty, and I haven't been able to taste dog although my mother says it's good.

Haha, sorry. We watched a Frontline Report on animal poaching in China/Southeast Asia in general, and the reporter used one of his connections to get a private room at a fancy restaurant in China. The gave him two menus, one for the normal customers, and one for the special guests who get the private rooms. Special menu included meals such as body parts from poached animals, including tigers.
Err...it's considered an aphrodisiac, and an extremely valuable one at that. Because you know, it's not so easy to go up to a tiger and chop off his dick. These rare things are almost always more medicinal in purpose rather than nourishing or even tasty.
