This is exactly the type of example that the world needs. If the politicians have the cojones to delve into the realm of legalisation, then the whole world could reap the benefits of ending prohibition. Sadly most politicians do not think like this.
It's about darn time. I posted this on FireflyIV's page, but I'll paste it here as well so everyone can see:
I don't know why people can't see the correlation between illegal drugs and crime. When the US banned alcohol in 1919, it led to several crime families rising up. Crime rates rose, alcohol consumption actually rose, and prohibition was a massive failure.
By keeping hard drugs illegal, crime families and cartels are able to continually operate. As controversial as it sound, if we legalized heroin and all other drugs, these cartels would have nothing to sell. How would they make profits? They could go to ransom and selling weapons, but that cannot fund political groups or major gangs. Legalizing drugs would eliminate the problem of drug cartels.
The problem on top of that was that the alcohol that was being made (moonshine, bath tub gin etc.) was unregualted and had allsorts of nasty stuff in. Plus you wouldn't know what proof it was.
Nice thread lige politicians should seriously think about followinf Portugals example if it is working.

One of the main disadvantages of drugs prohibition, is that it inhibits legitimate drugs companies from producing, better, safer drugs with enhanced ups and minimised lows, as well as reducing their addictiveness. Where is the downside in that?
Very nice thread and link mate! I feel that politicians should follow Portugals steps that they are taking, and who knows, maybe it will help cut down on problems.
$36 billion per year. More than corn and wheat combined. It would still need a bit of control other wise anyone could grow it in their green house and they wouldn't get that tax. (I wonder why it is illegal)
