Quite often people just leave, unless they're like a major celebrity or something (and even if, in many cases) they will eventually be forgotten. Unless you have somehow been inscribed into the annals of internet notoriety, such as on Encyclopedia Dramatica or something.
Take home message: it's worth thinking about the extent of your activity online and how it will reflect on you once you're gone.
