It was a place back in the middle ages where people would meet and converse among another. Liquor was served there as well, but they called it ale or wine back then.
The tavern is the place where sports, life, and random things can be discussed. There are other sections for programming, music, art, video games, etc, so the Tavern is the place where everything without a forum can be discussed.
