Everything in that game seems automated. You'll probably acquire one when you gain a level or something. I did.

Well, I gained a level a while ago, but I didn't get a weapon.

Also, I saw a level 1 with a sword, so it can't be because of leveling up. :/

Random. You can start with one, or you can get one from leveling up. I started with a dagger.
