From shoutwire:

"French researchers announced recently that they have been able to transfer data optically at a speed of 16.4Tbps (thatâs terabits per second, or about 17 billion kilobits per second). Yes, thatâs over 11 million times faster than todayâs DSL connections.

At these rates they were able to transfer 2.05TB or about 100 HD movies every second. The researchers believe their work could eventually lead to 100Gbps ethernet connections.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of this is that the transfers werenât happening over a few inches or feet. On the contrary, the data was traveling over a whopping 1,500 miles. With this the researchers have set a world record for bandwidth capacity by distance.

The research, performed at Bell Labs, involved several new technologies such as a âhighly linear, balanced optoelectronic photoreceiver and an ultra-compact, temperature-insensitive coherent mixer.â Yeah, we have no idea what that means either.

So what will come of all of this? Bell Labs claims that this research will âpave the way to the future of communications.â Most importantly, the researchersâ work shows that the potential for higher bandwidth is present, and we just need to learn how to utilize it."

...I am speechless.

this is total BS. To have a 16.4 TB connection you pretty much have to have NASA in you back yard...

I can assure you that no matter the technological advances that are made regarding download speed, the U.S. is still going to be being screwed over by the likes of Comcast.

I'm speechless. I wonder if it possible to have lag like that xD

That's amazing, but how will it effect our daily life? Matrix? Ghost in The Shell?

Plug that cable behind your neck? that would be cool....

In was going to Japan and the speed was 200Mb/sec and it's only $15/month, fiber Optics yayyyyyyyy!

at brown sometimes the internet hits like 400 KB/sec Though i've never seen a connection that goes past 2.2Mb/sec which leads me to become skeptical of most claims.

My connection compared to 16.4 TB....fail.

Not so fail.... U guys see.. U use ADSL or similar speed 56k/100k/400k and u get around 1Mb/s-4Mb/s Maximum.

But in Japan, they use fiber optics, which is $40/meter and the download speed is 100Mb/s - 200Mb/s.

Wow, a epic fail.

I think if it's really 16.4Tb, that's mean the download speed will be WOW Mb/s bwahaha
