Well, lately I've seen a lot of necroing of threads. Some of them not having been posted in for over a year. I think a good way to avoid this would to have an auto lock, by which I mean after a certain amount of time without posts, the thread gets locked. I'm thinking something like a month or a month and a half.

What do you all think?

(And sorry if this has already been talked about, I'm too lazy to look for it. Please don't yell at me.)

YELL!!!

Anyway I don't like pointless necroposting of threads mainly ones that have been answered and the person is trying to get cheap AP but they would have to be inactive for more than a month and there are too many circumstances alas not all necroing is too get AP sometimes threads are revived for a good reason. Then again I have seen on several occasions mods telling people to make new threads rather than revive old ones but I'm not sure if this is just for polls and the like. Good idea but it needs some work.

how about anything from page 5 and more is auto-locked

i tried to suggest everything from page 5 and more is deleted but was told that then all the posts wouldn't count from those and there'd be major docking in people's AP, locking is different... i guess it works

Good idea, I've seen similar things in play before. It helps cut down on all the junk. A month seems about right, maybe even too long.
And if some one really wanted to continue a thread, having a good reason, they could simply make a new thread as a continuation of the older; perhaps placing a link to the other as a reference guide.

Um...could you specify? Do you mean in new threads or old? Why page five?

Hmm you see there are certain threads that just die off for a while just because people are taking a break from them. I believe destroy bob was revived after being a dead thread for maybe a couple of months and it was not a necro post. While I don't like people necro posting as much as the next person, there could be consequences in creating a system like this that you need to bear in mind.

Well, what do you suppose is done about this, crimson? An auto lock seems like a better idea than the mods going through every thread seeing if it's been dead too long due to lack of anything to talk about.

Old threads don't create necro posts. Spammers create necro posts. You deal with the spammers, you fix the problem. Just locking all of the threads is fairly pointless to me, as some of them you may want to revive eventually, and I have seen it done before plenty of times. The only thing I could think of that could help, is if you added the option for people to lock their own threads, in case they don't want others to post on it, and since Mods can unlock threads I don't see what harm this could do?

That sounds like a good idea. One thing I see as a problem is "dealing with the spammers." That really isn't possible.

And by "that sounds like a good idea" I meant the ability to lock your own thread. And one thing about reviving good threads. You could just make another thread for it after it's been locked if it's necessary. You could call it "(Name of original thread) ~Continued~" or something.

Hmmmm.

I meant the ability to lock your own thread

Hmmmm...no. I can see that feature being abused by users who don't like the direction of their thread for some arbitrary reason. Some threads change in a manner acceptable to the forums.

well while I did realize that as an option, I thought about it, and the only issue I have with this is that it could lead to repeat threads and an excuse to make repeat topics, which repeat threads have been an issue in the past.

One thing I see as a problem is "dealing with the spammers." That really isn't possible.

Well while it is impossible to get rid of spammers in their entirety, it is more like a containment policy. I mean what are mods for if not to take care of spam?(besides giving out merits)

Do you like the auto-lock idea Strop? Or is that a "Hmmmm...no" as well?

the only argument against is that sometimes threads do get revived, and they do well at it! but if you wanted to continue a thread that much, i guess you could make a special request and get it unlocked? (does that ever happen?)

how about after a certain amount of time, only people with a certain amount of AP can revive it?
