Recently, I remembered a "word" my sixth grade teacher showed my class. The word was ghoti. At first glance, it looks like it'd be pronounced like the beard, but it's actually pronounced like fish. Look here to learn more about how this is actually true.
Do you think there's really any correct way to pronounce something?
And also, do you know any other "words" like ghoti with abstract pronunciations?
Well, theirs the word lead. It can mean that your are showing someone the way or an element. Theirs no wrong way to pronounce it but if you pronounce in a different way, you'll have a hard time saying a command and whatnot.
I will admit that the English language has several odd laws and workings within it. Yet they all work in context of each word they are used in. You can not just take out part of a certain word which has an odd rule applied to it, and flaunt it about to make a point.
In my eyes, that is like saying "Dude, that guy has had unprotected sex 5 tmes this week." What was left out was the part about how he and his wife are trying to have a child.
Hmm, I see I made Voidy mad....again. >_> I'm not saying it's right to twist the English language around like that, but there are certain forms of twisting the language that are really fun to do to annoy people. :P
And when I said my question, I didn't mean homo...nyms? Whatever the word is for words that sound the same that mean different things. I meant like how you pronounce the "a" in tomato and stuff like that.
Yeah, IPwnGamezz, apparently you didn't look at the link I put which I told you to look at if you didn't get why it's pronounced like that. Lufffi basically summed up what it said, or more of took the important stuff from it and put it on here.
