So i have been hearing thing like the Gaming industry can't been affected by the recession and Sales of games will always be up. What do you guys think about how the video gaming industry is going to deal with the recession and the economic crisis?
I heard that March game sales were much lower than expected, and that it's not doing so well. Check out msnbc.com, I've seen some articles on there about the gaming industry.
How it already has. Lots of jobs have been lost already; I work at a VG company where a significant amount of turn over has already happened. Stock prices are in the tubes and won't recover though until the market does. The reason why video games are still getting significant sales is because people don't want to go out and spend, so they instead choose to stay at home.
To that end, staying at home winds up boring unless you have something to do... so people buy games instead. I wouldn't be surprised if DVD sales were still pretty good.

At first I didn't understand how, but I guess that makes sense. Might be a smart career to go for :|
People will stay at home but i think they will be less likely to pay for games because they will need to resverve their money, on the other hand games aren't that expensive(imo) and they won't be buying games that much for it to be that much of a drain on their money.
You'd blow.. 10 bucks to go see a cool new movie that came out in theaters right? And how much entertainment do you get for that 10 bucks? Couple of hours yeah - average of say 2?
Now think about the last brand new VG title you dropped say.. 50 bucks on. How many hours of entertainment do you get out of that? 10? No. Way more. Well, usually anyway. Way more bang for your buck.
But just because you play more often than just blowing off your money at an arcade or movie, the gaming industry isn't recession proof. It all boils down to being vanity. You don't need VG's, they aren't a necessity, thus, they are going to drop in value... Eventually.
Well theres always gamers in the world so we dont have to worry about it much but it doesnt help that games are like 60 dollars each............., but people are still buying them so i guese everything is kinda fine in the gaming world/ market
I have a job, and working in the medical school pays well, because everyone still need cancer research... and people related to the medical profession in general.
You can't say it's recession proof Ricador - lots of people working in the VG industry have lost jobs, and I know quite a few projects have gotten canned as a result of it.
Is it going to go belly up? Of course not - but it's not immune.
It's not recession proof. Sales of Wiis in Japan have been falling for the past few months, however it is an inferior good, so as Hidden said, instead of going out, people are saving by staying in and playing video games.
The thing is, gaming is not a necessity so therefore most people wouldn't generally go out and buy games when they need to buy medication for their problems.

Under normal circumstances, it would be more elastic, but because people can't afford to go out to the cinema/eat out every week, they wll invest in entertainment that is more long term, like a video game.
I know the movie industry has not been affected. Why? Because people who aren't working need to be entertained. I remember when my dad was out of a job, he went to the theater and the video store all the time. It was his way of escaping the thought of no job.
I wouldn't doubt if the video game industry were to boost a little for the same reason. At the same time, since videogames are a bit more expensive than movies, I also wouldn't be surprised if the industry falls a bit.
