Today i got in trouble with my math teacher for NOT using a calculator during my test. He said it took to long to do it manually but i completed my tests 30 minutes early, and got 35/38 for it. I am in year 11. Have any of you been in trouble for anything like this?
Nice job on your test. When you say year 11 do you mean a junior in high school? If thats the case then how did you do the math in your head...unless you in geometry.
i am not using this to say i am smart, but not using a calculator is something there is absolutely nothing complaint about. I started this thread to see if anyone else has got stupid teachers.
Do you usually get average or below average grades? If so, he may have believed you cheated. I know that if I didn't use a calculator in my class, did that well, and finished so quickly my teacher would definitely be suspicious. Also, did you show work? Teachers here in the US sometimes flip out over that.
Which state Australia? That'd give me a hint as to the actual subject level you might be doing, because, for example, there's no such thing as "simple business math" in NSW in subject levels higher than General or maybe even Advanced.

must not be that smart if youre in geometry lol...
and if youre a junior, the smarter kids do calculus, and you don't really "NEED" a calculator because it is just anti-derivatives.
blackrabbit is 15, so I assume he is in algebra. And you're right, you don't need a calculator for that either, so I say you're not "too smart" rather you are in a mid range. And not to be mean but your teacher must be... ok I won't say it.
Ok gotcha. I guess its called something different in austailia. If it was simple business math then I don't see why you got in trouble. I'v taken a business math class and the math is simple.

I think it would be quite difficult to do many things in Algebra without a calculator. The square root of exceptionally large numbers to begin with, aha.
I don't know how different it is in austrailia but I'v taken several business classes and even in the adavance classes you realy don't need a calculator. Bummer that you got in trouble.
well blackrabbit going straight to the point of this thread, I tend to have a lot of annoying Math Teachers, as well...

This stands very much true where I live. I am not sure why, but some teachers don;y understand that certain equations can be done in your head, and do not have to be written down. A group of students once called me a cheater after my teacher pointed out that I showed none of my work on a test, but instead actually just used a calculator and my head(some things really do take too much time for me without a calculator) but my teacher was even worse since she tried to claim that it was impossible to do so for some reason, and that was just maybe a month or two ago. The same thing has been happening to me since 5th grade when I started working with Algebraic logic, since at that time showing your work took twice as much time as actually figuring out the answer for me. All I can say is that yes with math I get a lot of teachers that are annoying about those types of things.
Title changed so it sounds less up itself and therefore less likely to attract putdowns.
There's a way to go about these things.
I can't answer this question because I'm not in school and I hold immense respect for the majority of my teachers...sometimes there are real clangers like the registrar who told me that you had to lie a patient left-lateral to hear an aortic regurg, but I'm not going to go specifics because that'd be poor form.
