All online games are made for nothing but taking money off of the stupid. MMORPGs are so numerous now that you could think of anything and find one.
If I had the money to blow I would go with WOW. The sheer size of the world means you could do a lot of exploring. But with that there is the problem of the power leveling needed to progress past the monsters. You reach a point where everything can one hit you. And a million attacks would not chip at the hp of the enemy.
Used to play runescape but it is just so... limited. Nothing is improved on, just added. It seems the only reason of the non membership experience is to get hooked. And then... well some people barely play it for five minutes a week.
I haven't played many MMOs but my favorite online games are probably Starcraft and Diablo 2. Those should be on the list up there. RTS games are great, like chess minus the turn based part.
Diablo 2 was the most fun I've ever had powerleveling, probably because I had a bunch of friends to play with.
