Well, if you were trying to make an accurate comparison, Sonic can run *much* faster then mario, roll into a ball & use his spines to attack his enemies, use the power of chaos emeralds to turn into another form that's even faster (to the point where he's practically flying) and use magical rings that make him impervious to harm while he's holding onto them.

And don't forget all of the other things mario can use in SMB3, like the leaf, tanooki suit, frog suit, hammer suit, etc.

I vote Mario. When you compare all of his games to Sonic's, Mario can do so much more. Especially with the different suits.

That is a tough one but Mario was a cooler character.

Mario's original. Sega was just looking for something that might make them cool. And sonic only has one eye with 2 pupils. Anyone else notice that?

For important reasons I change my original choice from Sonic to Mario. Though Mario may look awkward compared to Sonic and "less cool", he's awesome!

Mario, the story is nicer, the characters are cuter... Plus with his little moustache, he looks like Stalin. Lugi and Yoshi are great too.

Fun fact: Theres a gene called Sonic the Hedgehog. Apparently it causes growths on your spine. Like a hedgehog.

Mario, he stood the test of time much better than Sonic. I find the Mario platformers to be much more entertaining than Sonic.

Of course you could always just look at the number of games each has as a measure of their success.
