There are two answers to this question. It entirely depends on how you define sound.
1. the sensation produced by stimulation of the organs of hearing by vibrations transmitted through the air or other medium. 2. mechanical vibrations transmitted through an elastic medium, traveling in air at a speed of approximately 1087 feet (331 meters) per second at sea level.
If 1. then this the answer,
No, it creates a wave through the air but that wave isn't a sound. You need someone to hear it so that their brain can interpret the stimuli before it is actually a sound.
If it's the second one then yes it did create energy that traveled through the air.
Though most people think of sound as a sensation that humans interpret and if there is nothing there to hear the sound then it did not make a sound.
