Defense Secretary Robert Gates has praised Specialist Zachary Boyd who was woken up by enemy fire in his post in Afghanistan. Boyd immediately grabbed his rifle, helmit, and body armor and ran outside to join the fighting, all while wearing pink boxers that said "I love New York".
Source; MSNBC.
Just thought this was an interesting story, didn't even have time to throw on some pants, just imagine being shot at by a guy in pink boxers.

I think it shows a serious amount of balls on his part, to just jump out there and start defending his post.

Serious balls? As Devoidless said, it makes no real difference. I have a brother in Afghanistan right now. Stuff like that is commonplace. This just happpened to be caught on camera. Also, when he claimed he was scared of losing his job, I thought he was meant to be joking.

No he probably was serious considering that this was caught on camera and posted on the web, basically internationally.

Although your gotta wonder what how humiliated the Taliban will be, that they were getting shot at by a half asleep guy in pink boxers. *snicker* I can imagine this... *Taliban soldier speaking to Americans* In five minutes we will commence attack, please make sure that all soldiers have all of their clothing on, thank you for your time and have a pleasant day.

Well, according to the article, at least what I got out of it, he was embarrassed by the photo and was afraid that he would be kicked out of the army for it.
So I doubt it was a PR thing on the part of the soldier.

um.. epic FAIL...

PR on the Defense Chief.. just like when a mayor gives a police officer a medal.. not saying they dont deserve praise

I know I'd rather be shot at someone who's half asleep and unprepared than someone who was wide awake and ready for me. I'd wager the Taleban are no different.

If his position was being fired upon, he wasn't exactly going to take his sweet time. I don't think he deserves to be singled out. It's all to do with the media.

Okay, this is an interesting story but what do you want to debate about. Is there anything to talk about. I think you are just informing us, no debate. So, in that case, I think this should be LOCKED.

Hey, newbie, this forum section is not JUST for debating, it is also for sharing news and things like that. This thread is fine.

Hehe. That is funnny. And I agree, stuff like that is probably commonplace. Kinda fun that they caught it on camera. Don't need to make a huge deal out of it.

Hey Ricador.

This is also a place where calling someone a newbie and berating them is frowned upon. Informing them gently about how things work is better.

Or, you know. Leave it up to us mods to do our job.

Kthnx.

It very well might be commonplace, I can honestly say that I don't know. Perhaps you are different than I am, but if I here bullets firing at my place while I'm sleeping, the last thing that I would do is jump out there without putting on pants. I'd be scared shitless and would put all my gear on. Could simply be because I'm not a soldier, though.

And later in the article it mentions how when he spoke to his mom, he was seriously afraid of losing his job. That's the part that I was referring to.

That's what I'd put it down to. Military training; the use of classical and operant conditioning to programme a set of responses to certain stimuli, like gunfire for example.

My brother was involved in the longest fighting engagement by British forces since WW2 in the battle for Sangin when his regiment was surrounded in the town. He saw young lads of 16 continue to fight after having their cheeks removed by bits of shrapnel. What this man did was not brave or out of the ordinry by any means.

I see, fair enough.
