Full Article

A giant blob of cold material was found beneath Nevada recently and is between about 30 miles and 60 miles in diameter (between 50 km and 100 km) and extends from a depth of about 47 miles to at least 310 miles (75 km to 500 km) beneath Earth's surface. And is probably 15 million to 20 million years old.

This is just creepy, but who knows what is in the blob. It might bring new materials and mining operations, or it could just cause the state to sink into it's soft gooey center.

It definately sounds fascinating. Just when you think you heard just about everything about this ball of rock!

It's a bit deep for a simple dig to research it... but perhaps it's possible for some highly specialised drills? Who knows. I know I'm interested

i think the farthest we've ever dug into the earth was like 2 miles so i think its a bit out of our reach plus it would take years before we'd even reach it

Haha, goo to know that someone else has seen it too ;-)

But anyways, the article makes it sound like it is likely just melted mantle. When one continental plate subducts under another, it gets pushed downwards and the heat from the center of the earth melts it. I think they are just calling it a 'blob' for lack of a better name. I don't think it is anything new and exciting. They already knew that this happened, now they just have the technology to actually see it.

Melted mantle that cooled, but still kept in goo form? I'm not a genius in physical science, but that doesn't add up. I think a project like this could rack up a serious need of money that our country just doesn't have. The further down you go means less oxygen and I may be mistaken, but I believe the pressure increases.

Sorry for doublepost, but I was wondering... Is the blob traveling towards the earth's core? If so, would the mass of the blob be enough to significantly alter the core's mass? Wouldn't that be dangerous?

... No it would make the clouds turn to cotton candy -_-' Yes, it should, if it doesn't then ok, anyways if the blob is small, it should burn up right, oh watever, I don't know.
