I was on wikipedia, just reading random things a few minutes ago and I stumbled upon a quote from Billy Joe Armstrong, lead singer for the band Green Day.

"I think people are born bisexual, and it's just that our parents and society kind of veer us off into this feeling of 'Oh, I can't.' They say it's taboo. It's ingrained in our heads that it's bad, when it's not bad at all. It's a very beautiful thing."

It got me thinking though, because society does seem to affect very many things without us even knowing it. So why not sexuality?

My stance on this is that it is probably partially true, I think that when people are born they are not entirely heterosexual or homosexual, but I won't say that we become on or the other solely because society says so. I think that it's a combination of the society that you live in and different experiences that you end up having.

So what do you guys think?

um first epic fail... that article was probably written by someone that was 12.. but seriously wikipedia is not always a credible source to use. anyone can edit the articles.. in almost all of my college classes when we had a paper to write wikipedia was never an allowed source..

I knew someone was going to say something like that, I shouldn't have even told you guys where I got it. It doesn't matter who said it, all that matters is the message. That's what I want people to debate, I don't care if you like Green Day, or if you don't think Wikipedia is a credible source (I know it isn't). I just thought it was an interesting message. Whoever said it.

Oh ya, thanks for giving your opinion on the topic.

I honestly do not think so. Why would you be gay and then be turned. All gays are born gay. They do not change.

Tell that to the Jesus Campers.

I remember in a book about this that it states that a males penis must go into the woman's vagina

Must?

Either that book needs to be burned or your comprehension skills need some work :s

if you're 'gay' then you're also probably a virgin, bisexual is a bunch of nonsense

Okay, I think you need a big dose of perspective right about now :/

Perhaps you mean to say that &quoteople who claim they are gay at a young age mightn't know better"? Because that does happen to be a common argument. One couched in a heteronormative position which means that in terms of argumentation it's useless.

Also:

Physically capable: yes.
Mentally: no.

What does this mean? It seems somewhat sensible to acknowledge both a &quothysical" and "mental" component but without proper definition I'm not sure everybody's going to be on the same page.

I believe we are born naturally heterosexual as that is instinctual, and your sexuality may change throughout your life based on personal experiences.

I agree with this comment

im not sure which comedian said it, but being bisexual doubles your chances for getting a date on friday night haha..

myself am heterosexual, i have no problems with gays or lesbians or bisexuals. i may not be 100% comfortable but i have no problems and unless you hit on me i would probably never have a problem with you

Quite a few. It's not an uncommon joke.

To follow on from what I said earlier: to those people who think that those who believe themselves to be gay/bi and are skeptical, asking "how do you know if you haven't tried"...

...then how do you know you're straight if you haven't tried swinging the other way?

Think about it!

Trust me, I am pretty sure I am striahgt! It was THAT party.

New-born little babies are not bisexual. As I said before, they don't even know what being gay/bi/ or straight is all about. All they know is that she is the "Momma" and he is the "Dadda."

But isn't your sexual orientation more of an unconscious type of decision? I mean you don't go around say "I'm going to be straight today" or "I'm going to be gay today", you just are. So they probably have a sexual orientation, it's just no very pronounced and they aren't aware of it.
