"A long time ago, in ancient China, an evil general named Dragon Fist overthrew the old emperor in a coup and became the new ruler. Under his rule he created an oppressive regime, stamping out rebellion and consolidating his empire. Under the order of the Jade Emperor, several spirits were incarnated among men to restore peace to the land."

This is a new RPG I am starting with a completely different "game engine." Based on the wuxia genre of books and movies (think Hong Kong kung fu flicks), players will be able to choose from 3 classes, 5 elements (will be explained later), 11 skills, 9 fighting styles, and 12 weapons.

Most RPGs here borrow game mechanics from Sonny or Monsters Den, which is fine, but has the downside of becoming overly predictable. To address this, I have developed a system of combat utilizing playing cards. I'd like to demonstrate this system first before starting the game.

In this demonstration, I'll use the Brawl fighting style, which is the basic fighting style that thugs, soldiers, and those unversed in martial arts will use. We have two soldiers with 2 health, and basic attacks that deal 1 damage.

Each soldier has a deck of poker cards representing their moves. Number cards (2-10) represent their basic attacks, face cards their special moves, and aces their ultimate move. As you level up in this RPG, you will have the freedom to choose or even develop your own moves based on your fighting style, and build up your deck.

Now in order to deal damage to the opponent, one side must win a "bout" of 5 draws. To demonstrate this:

1st draw: Soldier #1 drew an 8. Soldier #2 drew a 4. Soldier #1 wins the draw.
2nd draw: Soldier #1 drew a 3. Soldier #2 drew a 6. Soldier #2 wins the draw.
3rd draw: Soldier #1 drew an 8. Soldier #2 drew an 8. Neither of them wins the draw.
4th draw: Soldier #1 drew a K. Soldier #2 drew a J. Soldier #1 wins the draw.
5th draw: Soldier #1 drew an Ace. Soldier #2 drew a 10. Soldier #1 wins the draw.

In this bout, Soldier #1 won the majority of draws, therefore, they get to deal damage. I choose the highest draw to become the damage dealer, which in this case is the Ace. In the Brawl fighting style, the Ace attack is the Strangle, which we'll say deals 2 damage in this case. Soldier #1 deals 2 damage to Soldier #2 and wins.

However, I will not reveal draws like this; instead, I will narrate them in a more active style. I might narrate this fight like this:

The two soldiers face each other, ready to battle to the death. Soldier #2 charges and attempts to throw a punch, but Soldier #1 side steps the attack, grabbing him by the throat and strangling him. The attack is fatal. Soldier #1 wins!

It might be a little complicated at first, but I have tested it thoroughly to make sure it works.

Here are the rest of the mechanics. The application will be coming soon.

Attributes
Instead of your typical Strength, Speed, Intellect, Dexterity attributes, I've replaced them with Body, Mind, and Spirit. Body determines your physical strength and vitality, Mind determines your cunning and your speed, and Spirit determines your skill with weapons and Chi. When you level up by gaining sufficient experience, you will have two free attribute points to spend.

Classes
Fighter: Excels in Body, weak in Mind. They are the strongest hand-to-hand fighters and the most survivability. Fighters can gain experience by training or by defeating enemies in battle. Fighters start with 3 Body, 2 Spirit, and 1 Mind.
Rogue: Excels in Mind, weak in Body. Rogues are the fastest and most cunning class, which makes up for their lack of strength or survivability. Rogues can gain experience by receiving money or treasure, or by defeating enemies in battle. Rogues start with 3 Mind, 2 Spirit, and 1 Body.
Monk: Excels in Spirit. The monk is the more balanced class. They have started cultivating their Chi and weapon skill before either the Rogue or the Fighter. Monks can gain experience by defeating enemies in battle or by meditating. Monks start with 2 Body, 2 Mind, and 3 Spirit.

Elements
In this universe, each person has an element that determines their personality and the direction they can focus their Chi. They are the five elements: Wood, fire, earth, metal, and water.

Wood is sensitive, which allows them to empathize and persuade to greater effect. However, they have a tendency to lose their head in anger as a result. Their talisman is the Dragon. As the most poisonous element, Woodâs ultimate power is Anqi, which allows practitioners to use secret, poisoned weapons to quickly take down enemies in a stealthy fashion.

Fire is creative, allowing them to devise ways to get themselves and their friends out of difficult situations. However, they tend to be more proud and possessed of less willpower than the other elements. Their talisman is the Phoenix. As the most destructive element, Fireâs ultimate power is Fa Jin, which allows the practitioner to concentrate Chi to the point where they can shatter rocks with a single fist.

Earth is distinguished by clarity of mind, meaning that they are able to see things as they are, and discern the true natures of people and situations. This clarity of mind also makes them more anxious and stressed. Their talisman is the Qilin. As the most stable element, Earthâs ultimate power is Nei Jin, which allows the practitioner superhuman stamina and vitality.

Metal is marked by intuition, meaning that they are able to predict the actions of others and the results of given situations with remarkable accuracy. However, they are easily depressed. Their talisman is the Tiger. As the sharpest element, Metalâs ultimate power is Dianxue, which allows the practitioner to paralyze, kill, or even heal by striking vital pressure points.

Water is spontaneous, allowing them to get along with others and greater reflexes. In a pinch they are the ones that can think the fastest to buy time for more long-term thinkers. However, they tend to be more jumpy and scared. Their talisman is the tortoise. As the freest element, waterâs special ability is Qinggong, which allows them superhuman speed and even the ability to defy gravity.

Two things to explain. A talisman is a good-luck symbol. For example, if you are Water, and you see a tortoise on your quest, you'll have better luck in your endeavors. If you had a weapon with Tortoise in its name, you might get a special combat bonus with it.

The other is your special ability. As you level up, and as you gain Spirit, you gain Chi levels, which dictate how well versed you are in your superhuman ability. For example, if you start off with Water and Qinggong, you will only be able to jump higher than the average human being. Later, though, as you cultivate your Chi, you will be able to levitate and defy gravity.

Skills
On your quest, you will meet many people. Skills can help you get along with them or help them. The skills are:

Equestrian: Ability to ride a horse in an expert fashion.
Herbal: Ability to create medicines and poison.
Craftsmanship: Ability to create and fix metal objects
Carpentry: Ability to create and fix wood and bamboo objects
Soothsaying: Ability to foresee enemy encounters
Stealth: Ability to move around unseen and sneak up behind others
Theft: Ability to pickpocket and steal objects
Persuasion: Ability to haggle and sway otherâs opinions
Subterfuge: Ability to bluff and deceive others
Art of War: Ability to identify and target weaknesses
Sabotage: Ability to destroy objects

As you can see, some are more physical and some are psychological. You can only have one skill, so choose wisely.

Fighting Styles
Now here's where it gets interesting. There are different schools of fighting, each with their own advantages. There are nine to choose from.

Snake: Focuses on rapid, precise attacks. Masters are capable of hitting multiple times in the time it would take an ordinary man to raise his fist.
Crane: Focuses on countering attacks. Crane masters win by utilizing the opponent's strength and imbalance when they attack.
Mantis: Focuses on defense, followed by a quick strike to a vital point.
Tiger: Focuses on knocking down opponents and immobilizing them with fierce attacks.
Monkey: Focuses on acrobatic dodging and evasion.
Drunken: Focuses on survival by being capable of absorbing damage and dealing plenty of their own.
Wrestling: Focuses on grappling opponents and immobilizing them.
Eight Trigram: Focuses on stability, evasion, and exploiting enemy weaknesses.
Eight Extremes: Focuses on short, explosive attacks.

Weapons coming up!

Weapons
Weapons follow a different fighting mechanic in that there are defense modes and offense modes. I still use cards and bouts to determine who deals damage, but depending on your speed and a bunch of other variables, you may fight defensively or offensively.

There are 16 weapons, which may be divided into four types.

Swords--The best defensive weapons.
Straight Sword: The gentleman of weapons, and the one with the best defense out of any weapon.
Saber: Can be dual-wielded, but you start with only one. The sword with the best offense.
Butterfly Swords: Dual-wielded. One of the fastest weapons, and capable of attacking multiple times.
Hook Swords: Dual-wielded. Capable of increased range and stunning opponents

Chains--The best offensive weapons. They are capable of increased range, but don't have the best defense.
Meteor Hammer: A rope with two metal balls tied to the ends. Capable of stunning opponents. This weapon can also be thrown at opponents to immobilize them.
Rope Dart: A rope with two darts tied to the ends. Capable of being thrown, and stunning.
Nine-Section Chain Whip: A long, heavy metal chain. Extremely powerful offense, but poor defense. Capable of being thrown, and stunning.
Three-Section Staff: The best defense out of the chained weapons.

Polearms--Balanced between offense and defense.
Crescent Sword: A heavy staff with a gigantic blade. Powerful offense.
Monk's Spade: A heavy staff with a spade on one end and a crescent blade on the other. Also powerful offensively.
Staff: The most versatile weapon. Capable of stunning opponents.
Spear: Can be thrown. Good offense.

Close-quarters--Special weapons capable of reflecting one's fighting style to a higher degree
Mace: Poor defense, but powerful offense. It also has the special ability to potentially destroy the opponent's weapon.
Emei Piercers: Two small, sharp rods with holes to insert one's fingers. They are one of the fastest weapons and capable of stabbing multiple times.
Chicken Sickles: Dual-wielded sickles based on the claws of a chicken. They are solid offensive weapons.
Wind and Fire Wheels: Dual-wielded circular blades. They are solid defensive weapons, and can also be thrown.

I will be accepting 5 people for this RPG. Once an element is taken, it's taken. You can choose the same class, fighting styles, or weapons, but don't choose the same element.

Also, I'll reserve Gregbyte a spot.

Bugsy the Fist

Since he wasn't here for weapons, I'll let him choose a weapon later.

Sorry my name isn't Bugsy the fist :P name him Flame of the East. And for weapon can I use the staff but I also want my guy to be proficient at unarmed combat. I guess Ive given my guy his share of advantages and disadvantages. Also, if you want a bio/description:
He wears your traditional White ki(I think it's called) and wears a brown cloak to disguise himself. Usually White bandages cover his fists and he fights barehanded but can also use a staff efficiently.

Gregbyte: Fighting style refers to unarmed combat, which is separate from armed combat. So don't worry.

Flame of the East
Level 1 Fighter
Experience: 0/100
Element: Fire
Skill: Art of War
Fighting Style: Snake
Weapon: Staff

CloudHill: I've accepted your application. Also, in Chinese it's called the Yueya Chan, or Crescent Moon Spade, so technically both of us would be wrong.

Err...the element you chose don't exist. Wind is actually not one of the five traditional Chinese elements. Right now we have Fire, Wood, and Earth left.

I also assume you meant to choose the Rogue class instead.
