As you might know there have been massive protests against the election results in Iran. My question is what stance do you believe the US needs to take in this conflict?
The last time we got involved in Iran, we installed a dictator, then then Iranians overthrew him in the Islamic Revolution. We mess with them, they mess with us. We leave them alone, they leave us alone.
Unless it escalates to all out civil war, there is nothing we can legally do anyway. It is neither sanctioned by the UN nor did they attack us, therefore, it's against international law to do anything at all. And if we do anything at all, and we lose (hypothetically), that would be the worst political blunder in the history of mankind.
But anyway, in an interview released today President Obama said
"The last thing that I want to do is to have the United States be a foil for those forces inside Iran who would love nothing better than to make this an argument about the United States. We shouldn't be playing into that"
Democrats are saying that he did well. They say that the US needs to stay out of it for the most part, while still condemning the crack down and making our side with the protesters clear. Republicans however say that America needs to lead the world, and take a more aggressive stance.
Personally I believe that we need to be very careful about what stance is taken, because if we get too far into it this will become Americas cause. This needs to be about Iran, and they need to do it for the most part on their own. Basically we need to stay in the middle ground and leave this up to the Iranian people. Other wise we're going to find ourselves approaching a war with Iran.
What do you think about the conflict? Do you believe that Obama's needs to take a larger role in this, or do you believe that the US needs to stay out of it?
I told people are next war is with Iran. US needs to stay out until it gets violent. Then it's our problem seeing as the UN uses us as the watchdog of the world.
Why should the US care about protests that are going on in other countries? As long as we aren't directly involved in those protests, we should just ignore it.
We have lost enough men and women in the Middle East we need stay out of Iran. There is always going to be violence over there ... too many radicals with money and weapons.
Neither Europe nor the United States should do something about the protests. They should wait to see if they Iranian people can overthrown the dictatorship.
Why does everybody assume that the US should be taking a stance on this. They are not the world police and throughout history they seem to be fairly good at making things worse.
Looking at Iran's response to the protesters, the US would do well to stay out of it. The 'Supreme Leader' made a speech in which he essentially blamed the British calling us the most 'evil' government in the Western world. This shows 2 things. 1 being that he needs a convenient Western scapegoat, and 2 that in not blaming the US it is clear that the Iranians have not yet ruled out a decent relationship with the Americans.
All the US should do is condemn the violent suppression of the protesters and say something along the lines of 'It is not our place to determine if the election was fair or not'.
Why should the US care about protests that are going on in other countries?
Because our relations in the future depend on the result of this. If we handle it correctly we may be able to improve relations. If we handle it incorrectly though we're going to make the situation worse. Oh ya, and the fact that the US is the self appointed world police. The government needs to fix our own country before we start worrying about others, but that's just not how it works in good ol' America.
