I didn't use any upgrades and still I managed to beat the game. Mostly because I didn't realize that there is an upgrade system until the end of the game. It's not that hard really.
I think you don't have enough space for it, but you can get quite high stats anyway with just replaing the first few levels and getting a ton of these gens.
yeah, at the end you can get +7 to each stat from that. but 5 jacKs and 1 of those genes = 11. And there's more than enough space to change the colour.
