Okay this is really hard to explain in real life, which leads me to believe that it's even harder to explain through the internet. Here we go...

What if my "red" was your "green"? What if what I see as red is actually green in your mind, and you just call it red? If anyone knows what I'm talking about, please help me explain it to people that don't know what I'm talking about.

This theory might explain why people have different favorite colors.

I do I think so your saying the color you know as red could be the same color but to me know as green?

Yes, exactly. I was wondering if there was any name for this idea. Also, this thread is just supposed to be an argument on whether or not you think this idea could be true.

This thread has some discussion going about the same thing and similar things.

But yes, it could. Because we can not see what other brains translate input into, we can not know if we really see things the same way.

Generally we all perceive the same differences, though.

Funnily enough I got scolded for saying something like that last year, when we were talking about discussions in class...
I still hold on to it, though, colourblindness being people with the combination of colours, that stop making sense/is too close to each other to make out.
But well.

You're just weird. just admit it and you'll come to your senses.

Now, you are just rude, just admit he is allowed to have his opinion, and it might make you a better person.

My doctor's colorblind and he was neurofeedback-ing me. He asked me if I saw the red number but it was really green.

Red-green colorblindness is the most common type.

Strangely enough I thought about this excact same thing before, and it had me wondering for days. It's quite irritating that there would be no way of ever knowing or finding out.... I doubt that really goes on, but it is an odd thing and actually very possible.

thats a very interesting theory... wow, its weird to consider this. what if ppl see trees in (my) blue and pink, and thats what their brown and green are. thank you very much for sharing this concept.

I've thought of this before. I don't think that we wouild se so differently that it would be two completely different colors, but I think we may see colors in different shades.

Hello there.

I had this idea once, but I do not share some ideas with people because they'd just think I'm insane.
I got your point. What if green, my favorite color, is what you call blue, YOUR favorite color?
There is no way to find out. Though, I'd say there is a way to prove. You call a color green, and say it is your favorite. Put three colors in front of somebody: green, red, and blue. Ask them to point green. They will point the same color that you call green.
We can never know if they actually see the same as us, but they do point to THAT green.

it is a very interessting point and one never to be solved. because if i call something green i can never know what colour in my definiton another person would see.
in a really crazy scenario i can imagine people seeing different colours but calling them one name.
the point is even if this would be true it does not matter as long as we percept colours consistently and what we see as eg. blue is always the same different eg. red colour to another person. we can even call it green to make it weirder. we would still function as well as we do, because the language defines the colour not aour perception. we would then name a colour but see something different. i mean no one(except colourblind people) would call snow(in its pure form ) something else as white. whether "white" looks the same to everyone is irrelevant for the communication of a group.

@Munhozmib,

Why would they call the colour 'Green' if it was different to the green someone else sees? They wouldn't have been taught which green is green.

I'm not sure if I figured this out right, but how could they be different colors if people are able to describe what the color looks like? My armatar is green, which is a mixture between yellow and blue. Everyone would agree with me. No one will say that green is really a mixture between red and orange.
