thing isn't plural either, but if u mean item and thing not thing(s)

item kind of refferes to a tool or usuable thing of some sort.

and thing, is just a general term of anything... ANYTHING.

A thing generally does not mean an item. It can mean an event, a person, a time, words, a phrase, anything. An item is an object.
