I've seen this a little too often lately, and I'm wondering why people seem to think its so devastatingly important for Obama to choose a church to go to, when in reality he won't be able to go that often and only matters to the Christian population. I mean, he's responsible for leading over 300,000,000 people, and even if he doesn't make each direct choice, taking several hours out of his schedule every Sunday is not exactly the best choice for him. Oh, and before people start complaining that he's taken a lot of time off already and he could have spent that at Church, he's taken time off because he has an extremely stressful position, and time off is supposed to be time off, not time pleasing the public.
I don't agree on the money point, the amount given if you go to church is usually fairly small and you don't need a ton of things to be Christian, some people don't even have a bible
As for the choices being made for you, yes, that's something I have a problem with, but this thread wasn't supposed to be another religion war topic

Lol, there were a few churches my friends used to go to. In order to be officially considered part of the church, you had to give 10% of your annual income to said church.

Okay, that's a little extreme, but usually its not so bad. Although, who the hell would want to go to a church that makes you give up that much of your income?
Do you have a problem with Colorado? I live there, if you have a problem with it see me firsthand.
Yeah, seeing how I'd probably be mobbed for being an Atheist. I honestly wouldn't expect to survive in some of the larger Christian community's, and at the very least I doubt I'd be be accepted as a human. Colorado itself is nice, but the religious background is too intense.
Saying Christian Coloradans mob Atheists is a prime example of streotyping, which is very offensive, at least in my eyes.
The thing with stereotypes is that they could be prevented though. If the extremists were just kept out of the spot light. That's why I don't always feel bad for using stereo types.
Sure, I'd probably get it in Texas and a few others, but its still one of the most religious states in the nation
I like being able to safely say I'm an Atheist and be able to talk about it, instead of hiding it, as its quite likely I would have to. I know you talk with your friends about it, but those people are your friends, they can feel safe talking with you about it.
It may be stereotyping to say that Christians mob Atheists, although saying Colorado is extremely religious and likely to reject Atheists isn't actually that much of a stereotype, more of a demographic thing.
Honestly though, have you never seen an extremist Christian? In high concentrations of Christians you're more likely to find an extremist, whether its because they're surrounded by other Christians and find it more acceptable, or simply because with higher numbers of Christians you're more likely to find someone who's a fanatic. The shooting of that abortion doctor was done by a Christian extremist, and although I'm not an Abortionist, I'm fairly certain religion will play a large role in community's in such a religious state.
Yes I see where you are getting that but many of my teachers and colleagues are also Atheist, openly stating it in normal conversation. When first finding out I'm not seriously surprised my neighborhood has quite a few Atheist people but they aren't openly ridiculed. I have never seen a rude or angry comment towards an Atheist at all for as long as I've been living here, my whole life. I've seen comments about Atheists for the first time here, on AG.
I know that they're parts in Western Colorado/Utah that are known for being extremely religious and against Atheists, although I'm glad to see that's not the prevalent mood throughout the state.
No, being completely honest I have never seen an Extremist Christian. I know many people who sing a hymn every morning, does that make them Extremist? No it doesn't.
I'm not talking about your personal experiences, as it'd be pretty unlikely for you to personally meet one, let alone know that they're extremist, but they're still plenty in the media which I'm talking about. What I'm saying is that although people usually paint Muslims as extremists, you'll find extremists in any religion.
Perhaps its because I'm not exposed to Muslim/Jewish community's as much, but mostly I see Christians having problems with Atheists, especially since in the Bible it states that non-believes are doomed to hell or something along those lines, and the fact that even as kids I've seen Christians often distrust/make fun of Atheists, even in fairly Liberal states.

Here in Texas? Yes you will. Only depends where you are. In the cities and suburbs no you won't get it. In redneck hillbilly country maybe. Just don't go around to everyone saying "Hi, I'm mike the atheist!" That'll get you shot. Don't answer if someone you don't know asks. Simple, problem fixed. However you will find a church on every street. Or two. Or five.
