Recently theres been a garbage strike, and of course, it has caused a lot of problems in toronto. But I, as an individual, have not seen anything around my area much different. the news quite oftenly makes things bigger then they are, any thoughts on this?
The garbage collectors had a strike in Vancouver a few years back. I'm just across the border in a commercial/residential part of the GVRD - I'm still like 10 minutes from the downtown core, but technically it isn't the city of Vancouver, so I didn't have to deal with it - it went on for quite a while though & my friends who lived *in* Vancouver were not terribly happy about it.
I am an expert about garbage strikes , so if it ends quickly it's not a big deal, but if it continues for weeks the garbage starts to smell, the roads can't be used well and even after the end of the strike the problem isn't solved, cause it takes some time to collect all the garbage.
It's not them its the garbagemens that are on strike.

Its not every were, and people put they garbage in baseball field, and stuff.
so if it ends quickly it's not a big deal,
Actually it is a big deal, they was already a manifastation agains the strike of the garbagemen, and people saying that the mayor must find a solution whit the garbegmen assossiation or something like that.
I was in Naples two years ago whilst the strikes were going on.
No Italian city wants their garbage and it's really hard to transport the garbage to the places where they can be, there is garbage everywhere they keep only some areas of the city clean.

I heard that one of the reasons there is such a problem, especially in the South is that the Mafia runs the garbage disposal business, and at the time I was visiting, the head honcho had recently been jailed and so there was a lot of infighting, and no garbage collection being done. Don't quote me on that though, as the source of that information was the owner of the hotel I was staying in, so it could be innacurate.

this is true. most of the problems in italy are because of the mafia or the camorra. its a similar crime syndicate from around naples. watch the movie gomorrha or read the book. the movie is ok but the book is really great. both deal with the functioning of the camorra and the methods of garbage disposal are shown there in great detail
Italy has huge difference, that were created because the advanced north was under Austria and France and the not advanced was ruled by Spain which wasn't that time a modern country. So now the north has excellent infrastructure (recycling centers, first-rate hospitals etc.) and the others don't. So the mafia can create problems to the law and gain money and power through the garbage issues.
