We recently got a few installed in my city, and already we have people protesting them because "it's just a way for the city to make money." Personally I think their brilliant and laugh every time I see the people who protest them. Anyway I just wondered what the AG community though about them.
Also if you don't know what they are, they're cameras (well yea..) that are placed beside lights or areas where speeding is common that take a picture of your license plate if you run a red light or are speeding. Then you get a ticket in the mail (for my city it's $100, and it does NOT go on your driving record.)
I think that I read somewhere about a wife that spied the husband thanks to Online Traffic Cameras, which are cameras linked to online websites that enable the public to view real time traffic conditions online.

Oh golly, how terrible! I would never do that. What else could they do?
Most crimes happen in private buissnesses. But if we nationalized those places there would be no problems!
Eh, not necessarily. I mean, a lot of private buissnesses already have private security firms & security cameras; it's not really crime prevention, it's just something to help catch them after the fact - but I get what you're on about
On a different note - why are people complaining about the government knowing where you are because of traffic cameras, when in reality, there are devices built into a lot of cars for the use of GPS that allow the tracking of the vehicle everywhere it goes. Not in every car, sure - but more & more these days. Additionally, when you use your cell phone or.. your credit card, or your bank card - these are all things that *could* be used to track your movements.
I should add though - this just in:
No one is watching you 24/7, and no one is paying attention.
I think that traffic cameras are a necessity because many people speed through yellow/red lights often causing terrible accidents. The cameras enable police to know whos fault it is.

Those cameras make me drive more dangerous. When I get close to the light, I start to speed up so it doesn't change yellow on me too late. I start to tailgate the guy in front of me so I can make it through.
Phoenix had speeding ones installed about a year ago for speeders. I can't remember how much it was but I got three of them. Like thelistman said they are quite sensitive. I got caught speeding only once, which I was speeding. The other two were me going two or three mph faster on the free way. They were slightly messed up that day and when I was passing them all I could see was flashes. Too sensitive.
OK... first off, the government can't make money by installing traffic cameras... they LOSE money. Second, I think that in these times, traffic cameras are a crucial part of any city. Every day I hear on the news about another family dying because of someone speeding or drunk driving. It also puts the intimidation factor in the city... people are less likely to speed now.

Why would they lose money? They make money because they catch more people breaking the law, thus allowing them to send out more tickets and get more money.

Actually that's pretty accurate...at least for the part about the government losing money. Your taxes are going to go to the government installing these cameras. The state isn't going to profit from watching us drive.
