This is a rather basic question that I happen to find myself asking sometimes. What is your opinion? State which you think would've come first and give a good reason as to why. I don't know if there has already been a thread on this, but I apologize if there has.
Well, it could also be said that in this problem, egg stands for chicken's egg. Thus, neither. You can go back a looong time, but in the end, we moved so far back into evolution that it's not a chicken at all.
I think Pizel is right. The chicken evolved from a prokaryote probably through abiogenesis, so it started out so basic that we didn't even recognize it as a chicken. Then it evolved to the point where it could start laying eggs.
According to the Creator of chickens, and the author of the Record of their origins, chickens came first. It was on the Fifth Day of Creation Week that He created "every winged fowl after [their] kind" (Genesis 1:21) complete with the DNA to reproduce that kind. Then He "blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply" (v.22) using that DNA. For the chickens this meant lay chicken eggs. Problem solved.

Even if abiogenesis is in fact truth, a chicken wouldn't directly evolve from a prokaryote. The chicken itself was not born from what we call a chicken today. Millions of years ago, we have a creature in the wild, maybe even similar to the chicken. As years go by, creatures evolve (that's right, I think it's safe to bet all living beings are evolving as we speak, but it won't be noticeable for years and YEARS) So this creature evolves say over 1,000 years, It may look slightly different. add on 10,000 more years. The creature has changed from what it was 11,000 years ago.
On another topic, there is no fine line on when the first "chicken" came to existence. This "chicken's" mother was probably just the same. The only difference could be a tweak in the celluar system. But this created something of a chicken. Now since the first chicken's creation, it has evolved alot. The first chicken and the present chicken are probably different looking.
Then it evolved to the point where it could start laying eggs.
You can't just evolve to the point of making eggs. Evolution would not take place in one chicken's lifetime. So it had to always have been laying eggs or the species would have died out.

As much as I am for creationism, using the Bible as a source of fact will get you nowhere.
