I want to know what you AG-ers think are the worst diseases in the world and a description of them and why you think they are the worst, oh, and please do not put diseases that the majority of us already know about, such as Cancers, STDs, Malaria, and all that, but put some really bad, really rare ones.
Like so-

Fatal Familial Insomnia
The age of onset is variable, ranging from 30 to 60, with an average of 50. However the disease tends to prominently occur in later years, primarily following childbirth. Death usually occurs between 7 and 36 months from onset. The presentation of the disease varies considerably from person to person, even among patients from within the same family.

The disease has four stages, taking 7 to 18 months to run its course:

1. The patient suffers increasing insomnia, resulting in panic attacks, paranoia, and phobias. This stage lasts for about four months.
2. Hallucinations and panic attacks become noticeable, continuing for about five months.
3. Complete inability to sleep is followed by rapid loss of weight. This lasts for about three months.
4. Dementia, during which the patient becomes unresponsive or mute over the course of six months. This is the final progression of the disease, and the patient will subsequently die.

This is one bad disease, because there is no cure, hence Fatal Familial Insomnia, and you suffer so much throughout until you eventually, cruelly die. This is a really rare disease, and is genetic as well.

So, that's how it's done, your turn AG!

Dengue Fever

Dengue fever is a disease caused by a family of viruses that are transmitted by mosquitoes. Dengue strikes people with low levels of immunity. Because it is caused by one of four serotypes of virus, it is possible to get dengue fever multiple times. However, an attack of dengue produces immunity for a lifetime to that particular serotype to which the patient was exposed.

Dengue goes by other names, including "breakbone" or "dandy fever." Victims of dengue often have contortions due to the intense joint and muscle pain, hence the name breakbone fever. Slaves in the West Indies who contracted dengue were said to have dandy fever because of their postures and gait

I still have a fear of Ebola. It can have a fatality rate of 83%. It affects cells that support blood vessels. The same cells form the connective tissues of the spleen, liver and lymph nodes. They hekp to make collagen etc. Blood clots when it meets collagen so damage to these sells causes clotting until there are no more clotting factors available. The ebola patient then bleeds out. Symptoms can be Fever, weakness, musclular pain, diarrhea and vomiting plus internal/externam bleeding. .... I think >.>

I'm only posting a link because of the extensive information on this disease... Keep in mind when you read this that it's only discussing MILD cases. This disease took my little sister's life... And to this date NO ONE has had a case as severe as her. She suffered severe organ damage that ultimately killed her. She was only 5.

Stephens Johnson Syndrome

I got this from the CDC website. It's for anthrax. It's the three variants. Quite scary.

Anthrax infection can occur in three forms: cutaneous (skin), inhalation, and gastrointestinal.

Cutaneous anthrax: Most (about 95%) anthrax infections occur when the bacterium enters a cut or abrasion on the skin, such as when handling contaminated wool, hides, leather or hair products (especially goat hair) of infected animals. Skin infection begins as a raised itchy bump that resembles an insect bite but within 1-2 days develops into a vesicle and then a painless ulcer, usually 1-3 cm in diameter, with a characteristic black necrotic (dying) area in the center. Lymph glands in the adjacent area may swell. About 20% of untreated cases of cutaneous anthrax will result in death. Deaths are rare with appropriate antimicrobial therapy.

Inhalation anthrax: Initial symptoms may resemble a common cold â" sore throat, mild fever, muscle aches and malaise. After several days, the symptoms may progress to severe breathing problems and shock. Inhalation anthrax is usually fatal.

Gastrointestinal anthrax: The intestinal disease form of anthrax may follow the consumption of contaminated meat and is characterized by an acute inflammation of the intestinal tract. Initial signs of nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, fever are followed by abdominal pain, vomiting of blood, and severe diarrhea. Intestinal anthrax results in death in 25% to 60% of cases.
