Why does the United States citzens call themselves Americans when there is a South America too... So tecnically that would saying we are the only Americans?
because we were the first on either continent to name our country America?
your country is not called america but usa. let's write that down fully oke... United States OF america. or US. just United States... leaving the whole amerika part away.
so no your country isn't called america. only the continents name is amerika.
I'm living in Japan, and people here refer to the U.S. as "America" in Japanese, but many of them know to refer to it as "The U.S." "U.S.A."
I've taught my kids that "America" is everything from Greenland down to Chile. Aside from Japanese people who still use the old version, the only other people I know who refer to the U.S. as "America" are people from there.
so when greece is going to call itself "united islands of europe" only them are europeans and the rest of europe isn't anymore?
If that's what they want to be called but if someone wants to refer to people of Europe they'd use the name of the continent European. It's the same as referring to people from North America or South America as North Americans and South Americans. Although I suppose it depends on people's view on how many continents there are. If you boil it down there's Afro-Eurasia, America, Antarctica and Australia. Of those only Africa and Eurasia and North and South America are separated from each other by water. Though I think most prefer the 7 continents.
so when greece is going to call itself "united islands of europe" only them are europeans and the rest of europe isn't anymore?
They could, and it would make sense to if there was another "united islands". Japan could choose to be the "United Islands of East Asia". That wouldn't make China or Vietnam any less Asian.
There have been numerous United States in history. United States of Belgium (1790), Republic of the United States of Brazil, United States of Central America, United States of Venezuela, United States of Indonesia just to name a few. They don't exist now though.
