Alrighty. I'm sure you've all heard of the fight over the Arctic by the 5 nations that border it, Russia, Canada, the United States, Denmark, and Norway.
If you don't know I guess I should summarize it. The Arctic is estimated to contain 25% of the worlds undiscovered oil and gas, so obviously everyone is after it. A country recieves 200 nautical miles off its coast into the ocean as "their waters," a country can expand this if it can prove through mapping the sea floor that the ridges in the ocean extend drom their continental shelf.
Now who do you think will win? I think we can all throw Denmark and Norway out the window. But between Canada the United States and Russia?
Russia has been mapping the sea floor with submarines, and have a paratrooper drop planned for the spring. Canada says they will meet any Russian aircraft that enters their airspace with scrambled jets.
I believe Canada has Arctic Sovereignty simply due to the fact that we are closer, so it is much more likely our land extends into the area. And I don't even know what the United States is doing in the equation, sure it's the continental shelf that needs to extend which would give them some sort of stake, but they aren't even close to the Arctic!
And I don't even know what the United States is doing in the equation

I can't think of a reason why the US would want to stick their noses in >.> lol
Last I heard on this matter a Russian submarine had planted a flag under the Arctic. Though I fear we have moved on from flag plating as a means of stating what is now ours.

Ever heard of Alaska? Just on the western border of the Northwest Territories?
Believe it or not, technically Greenland owns a mountain range the extends to the north pole.

Alaska? Where's that? I only know of Palinland.
GREENLAND IS OURS ROOOOAAAAR!!!!
Ok so you've got...greenland. Why did you name it that anyway?
All I know is Canada has been asserting itself in the Arctic for a long time.
The NorthWest Mounted Police established a post on Herschel island to control American whalers in the area in 1903.
When the Americans and Danish ignored Canada's claim to Ellesmere island in 1919 the Canadian government placed an RCMP post on the island.
Even though there was no one living within hundreds of km's of Bache Peninsula, Canada placed a post office there as a post office was an internationally recognized sign of sovereignty.
Canada has long been the only country that took a census on Inuit people and informed them of the laws of Canada, which they were to abide by.
Canada has always regarded the waters to it's north as its own, which vessels from other countries had to recieve permission to pass through. America has increasingly ignored these claims and passed through the area.
Canada would patrol the area with submarines, but we just plain can't afford it. As plans have been scrapped twice because of the high cost. We prefer everyone just get along and respect us without having to constantly guard our territory.
well, really, canada has so much oil anyway... why not give it to the US, just so the politicians cannot say, 'We have to intervene in the Middle East because our oil is there.' When we get most of our oil from Canada.
well, most of our oil is mixed in with sand. And just happens to be the most difficult and expensive oil to obtain. So we got loads, we just can't get it out of the ground...
International socialism would fixit
Yeah, but until then we can argue
why not give it to the US
Because we don't want to validate them
This might be way off topic, but whatever happened to Iceland and it's huge "OMG we are so far in debt" problems. I had thought Canada could pull a Newfoundland and get them to become one of its provinces in exchange for paying off all their debt.
