Well 30 years ago everyone was afraid of a huge population explosion, the Earth's population would skyrocket and we wouldn't be able to support all these people. Disease and famine would run rampant.

Years later...what population explosion?

It has turned out to be a dud, with many countries experiencing dangerous decreases in population.

Now, we haven't really figured out global warming yet, but the worst of the worst predictions haven't yet occured, and the Earth has gotten slightly cooler in the last decade and climate models haven't done a great job of predicting recent events.

Why do we always manage to find a crisis to worry about that will result in a horrific future for our species?

To make money, people were scared of global warming so they started buying 'green' products en mass.

Because as a whole, we are always looking for what will hurt us. Humans just can't think on the sunny side...

yup. crisis = interesting.

someday we'll have to set up an expedition to mars to make it so it supports life.

Should've said, experiencing dangerous population decreases or EXPECTING them.

Canada is setting itself up for a crisis (ironic). The baby boomers are going to be retiring soon and the numbe rof people of working age will decrease dramatically, causing a huge gap in the workforce.

Russia is experiencing steady population decrease, as well as Bulgaria.

Those are the ones off the top of my head. And many countries are in the boat the Canada is, it's not all about population, but age of population...there's a fancy term for healthy working population vs. dependents (children, elderly, those with medical conditions preventing work)

Most countries in Europe are actually experiencing a decrease in population. Russia actually paid women tens of thousands of dollars if they had children on June 12th (Russia Day). Germany was offering $10,000 to women who had babies in 2007.

Many who study population patterns believe that the Earth will top off around 12 billion people, then the population will plummet. The reasoning is that when countries industrialize, it costs a lot of money to raise a child. Children in third world countries are actually profitable because when they turn 6 or 7, they begin to work for the family and make money. In industrial nations, it costs nearly $250-500,000 to raise a child from birth to the end of college. So, in industrial countries, the rate of children being produced is lowering. For instance, in Japan, each couple produces an average of 1.5 children. This will cause a population decrease.

As more and more countries industrialize, the world will stop producing children. People who study population see the world population increasing steadily to 9 billion. Then that rate of increase will steadily decline until the world hits 12 billion. At that point, the population of the world will begin to decrease.

Thank you listman, you've got this knack to say exactly what I want to, but actually back it up, and make it sound smart and credible

I don't see how thinking we would experience population crisis would be ridiculous considering the mindset of the time.

We just went through a population explosion. The babies (baby boomers) from that were at the age to marry and have kids of there own. Many still figured that most family would be trying to have lots of kids continuing the population explosion. Now consider continuing this trend for another 30 years along with increased life spans. Does the idea of a crisis with the population possibly occurring really seem that unreasonable?

Of course this didn't happen there were a number of factors that changed.

Theres a problem. We assume we will continue the same trend for years to come. In reality, humans are the fastest changing species on the planet! It is ridiculous to think we would keep constant habits for more than 30 years.

Seeing as this is a different topic, I'll post on everything.

Because as a whole, we are always looking for what will hurt us. Humans just can't think on the sunny side...
-- For the ones that have the power to think, in the world -- They want to keep that power. Therefore, they come with a crisis. And its likely, as its been stated that someone uses that crisis to make money (IE : Sell green house products en masse) , a better example would be that the sub-group of environment besides c02 emissions caring, where people just care about what'd happen to the animalz.

Also, Humans are the fastest changing species on the planet if you categorize them such that they are characterized by their habits of how they make/do things

Lastly, Many countires are NOT experiencing booms in population, are you kidding me?

We've got a large majority of Europe and Japan, along with Russia experiences large 'opulation' issues. The problem in Europe is that the labor force is dying, as it dies, the immigration quota increases -- They fear more 'brown people' invading their nation -- Europe has seen different people, but they've fought among themselves until the last century. It changes things.

If you look at China, you'll see the population has stabilized, its not going far.

If you look at India, that place is stuffed.
Pakistan has half the population of USA stuffed into a size the third of Texas
Bangladesh is just about the same, stuffed into a smaller size
South East asia is jamm packed.
Africa is slowly growing in population, most of which will also -- be in poverty (at least, in major areas)
*All of these countries are gaining people, fast.

Population crisis exists in the world, and its a problem. It just hasn't gotten to the USA, -- Predicted to only increase about 200 Million-100Million in the next 100 Years

Is that a joke? We did have a population explosion. Places like India are in severe danger because they can't support their people. That's why things like HYVs exist, which are genetically modified plants and foods that produce a high yield and take less time to give off this yield.

The population in the European does not decrease, cause the old persons live longer and there are many immigrants, who have many babies. Also there is a small increase in the number of babies in the European countries, because the governments offer privileges to the couples with young children. These measures aren't very effective, so the problem of the quite low birth rates is not solved.
The world population is still increasing, just not in the "advanced" countries.

That's because as a species we do have enough resources to sustain ourselves. The main problem is to do with distribution and efficiency.

Although I believe you are taking a slightly simplistic view. India for example is set to have taken over China by 2050 with regards to population, as the average number of children per woman there is 6.

The Chinese don't make anymore many children, usually there is one child per family, though there are some exceptions. For example in the agricultural regions there is the 1+1 kid law, if the first child is a girl you can have an other one.
