Besides the speed, between the basic characteristicses of these new boats a great autonomy had to be to have, since they would have to accompany in his long trips the battleships to which they would protect. In east Spain type of ship received the name of torpedo-boat destroyer, and similar in French, contre-torpilleur; and in Italian, cacciatorpediniere. In English torpedo was originally denominated boat to destroyer, that later was reduced simply to destroyer. This name ended up happening to the Spanish like destroyer, supplanting to most complicated of torpedo-boat destroyer (the same happened in Italian and French).
