--------------------------------------------------------
At the end of century XIX navy faced the new danger that represented the torpedo boats, that were speedboats armed with one or several tubes torpedo launchers, that approached the squares at a high speed and launched their torpedoes, fleeing quickly thanks to their speed. In several actions these boats caused great armored damages to and cruises, that were not able to pursue, with their heavy artillery and its speed far below, to this threat. For this reason they began to design fast ships, whose main mission would be to pursue and to destroy the torpedo boats. Besides the speed, between the basic characteristicses of these new boats a great autonomy had to be to have, since they would have to accompany in his long trips the battleships to which they would protect. In east Spain type of ship received the name of torpedo-boat destroyer, and similar in French, contre-torpilleur; and in Italian, cacciatorpediniere. In English torpedo was originally denominated boat to destroyer, that later was reduced simply to destroyer. This name ended up happening to the Spanish like destroyer, supplanting to most complicated of torpedo-boat destroyer (the same happened in Italian and French).
