Alright, now before you all go saying "They're bad, don't swear!", just hear me out. What the heck is up with "bad words" or "rude gestures"? I mean, they're just words. They're just gestures. What makes them stand out from other words and gestures? Let me break it down for you: Take for example, the S-word. It's a "bad word". But what makes it different? I mean, I get how it could be rather lewd, but it's just another word for poop! So why isn't crap, or poop, or excrement a bad word? Why has "sh*t" been labelled as a bad word? And rude gestures. Take for example, the middle finger. Why is that offensive? You're showing someone your finger. I'm so offended. I mean, if the middle finger is offensive, then why isn't the forefinger or ringfinger expensive? I would not only like some cultural talk, but it would also be nice to learn about the etymology of these "bad words". Thanks, -Moat
I swear alot in front of friends etc. and in correct situations but I feel not even an urge to swear in front of family or teachers etc. I don't have to bite my tongue. it is all about using them int he right situation. I see nothing wrong with swearing but I know my parents do so I be polite and say "whoopsy daisie" instead of "fuck it" if I drop something XD. It is not EVIL (hands up if you get all the people in the video)
blimey
I just wave my fist in a 50's comedy fashion *waves fist*
It's true that ''blimey'' is not quite as satisfying as a well executed F-bomb, but that's not the point. Observational learning can be a powerful thing. I don't see why people resent not being able to swear all the time. The reason should be obvious.
I don't think you understand...at all. Did you even read the whole thing? I am not inclined to swear, in fact I prefer not to, since most people find it offensive to say the least. I don't resent not being able to swear all the time; I could care less about that. I don't want to be able to swear, because if I do, people will think all the less of me, and it really is rude. What I'm wondering is why they are so offensive? I realize that they are offensive in their own way, somewhat, but how are they offensive enough to be singled out as "swear words"? I mean, the a-hole-word is no more offensive than jerk or retard, yet it has been singled out as one of the most terrible and offensive words in the English language. And if it's so simple to understand, then please explain it. I'm just curious. Who the heck came up with the idea of shunned words and gestures? Honestly, I think Dane Cook's Middle Finger joke covers my question the best ;P Warning: Explicit Language(speak of the devil). Click link at your own discretion.
If you want a little more information on why/how words become swear words, click this link, and "The Origin of Curse Words" . Thanks to the FCC, the United States actually seems to be more uptight then most European nations when it comes to sensoring public media.
yeah i know exactly what you mean. your the kinda guy that wonders "who even decided that these words would become cus words?". cuz i am too. its just that people re now fixed on the thought that there bad words. some bad words mean bad things but others dont really have a definition. just dont use em. but i know what you mean man
Well, sticking up two fingers came from the English archers at Agincourt. The French had said that they would cut off the arrow-pulling fingers of the archers when the French beat them. Instead, the French were defeated and the archers mocked them by showing them their fingers, which were still attached.
F-22 is epic, but cost is astronomical, and quesitons may be raised over it's feasability to mass produce
The F-16 Falcon is far more epic. And I think you have posted in the wrong thread. Either that, or you are hallucinating. Or maybe you're hopelessly confused and think that airplanes and their economical pros and cons have something to do with this thread, which is in fact about the etymology of swear words?
some body in the past probably used those words or at least made those gestures up as a fad a long time ago which meaned their current defeintion. if like i said the word happy before people knew the word exists and used it as a bad word in the next 10 or 50 years happy will be a dangerous curse word which no one really cares about cuz ppl curse every day including me for no apparent reason
