"We don't want your sympathy. We don't want your power. We just want to be left alone."
"In a world that is always either vying for our power on their side or trying to kill us, no one listens to what we want. No one wonders what the true powers at play think. We're trampled into the dust, caught between a rock and a hard spot, in the crossfire of several rival organizations that want us for our own. But we are tired of it. And now we will stand. We will make ourselves be heard. And the world of the undead and the mythical will rue the day that they crossed...the humans."
Orso cried out in pain as the human's knife stabbed into his skin. He gripped the human, but they slid out of his tight grip and half-ran, half-slid through the dark alleys, the cold rain pouring down onto its head. He felt pity for it; powerless but for its ability as a sacrifice. They were the only things left in the world with souls. The only source of power for any creature left. And no defense against it except that of its technology and of its very soul; the thing that the forces of darkness wanted. For if a human's soul was strong enough, it could give its human many powers, such as to levitate or see into the future. And that was the one thing the undead couldn't have. Fast as lightning, Orso melded into the shadows and caught up to the human. He held the human by its neck up against the frozen, run-down alley wall. Baring his fangs, Orso stared the human in its face, the gleam of his baleful scarlet eyes seeing into its soul. He could give it power...or he could take its life.
Carl Sharp's breath came out in ragged, heaving gasps. He gripped his skull in his hands and focused intensely on the vampire's approaching fangs. A small line of scarlet blood trickled out of his nose and his head felt ready to explode. Carl knew he was pushing it. He'd never attempted to do anything this powerful, let alone in such a weakened state. His hands twitched erratically and his eyes rolled into his head. Finally, his right hand clenched into a tight fist. He stared ahead, at the dumpster. It slowly began to hover off the ground. Choking from the vampire's tight grip on his neck, Carl swung his fist to the side and the dumpster smashed hard against both him and the vampire. Carl groaned with the pain as it smashed his right leg hard between the wall of the alley and the cold metal of the dumpster. He ran again, and this time the vampire did not stir. It was crumpled against the wall, and seemed stunned and helpless. With a wave of his hand and another Herculean effort, Carl sent two more dumpsters to block both sides of the alley. It wouldn't hold the vampire for long, but it would at least give him enough time to escape. By now, Carl was exhausted; not just from all the running and physical fighting, but moving those dumpsters had taken an incredible feat of willpower. He doubted he could even lift a pebble. Miserably, Carl followed the rain-drenched matrix of run-down streets to the "safe house". Of course it wasn't safe. But it was his best bet. Carl's stride while he went up the steps of the apartment was bold and brave; but his clenched fists were shaking and his skin was pale and sweaty with exertion. He raised one trembling hand and knocked on the rotting pinewood door. "Hello?" he called.
In a world where vampires and werewolves rule supreme, there is one race that has a chance to stop them; the humans. The humans possess one power that the werewolves and the vampires do not; and that makes them both a threat and a liable sacrifice. Their souls. Their souls give them the power to control minds, and the power of telekinesis. The werewolves wish to kill the humans and forever eradicate the threat; the vampires want to strengthen the humans and bring this incredibly powerful force to their side. Caught between these two warring factions, the humans must fight for their lives. The humans dredge out a living, always in fear, always being attacked by either a vampire or a werewolf; or trying to prevent a rogue human from giving up the cause and signing a deal to one of the undead. If a blood deal is made, then the human race will forever be condemned to follow that deal; the one weakness of their having a soul. But now...everything will change. The vampires and the werewolves have finally seen past their differences and formed an alliance with one purpose, and one purpose only; to enslave the humans. But rogue vampires and werewolves who hate the opposing race are sabotaging the attempt at an alliance, murdering the other race and their own in an attempt to stop the truce, and some are even allying themselves with the humans. But with rocky relationships and betrayals within both the vampire and werewolf alliance, and the humans themselves, it is the toss of a coin whether or not the alliance falls...and which species will survive.
